Of course we all hope he's utterly terrific, but I think there's room for some regression and to still not feel terrible about it. Even if he's a 1.0 fWAR per year pitcher instead of 1.5 fWAR , probably still aren't gonna feel terrible about it. The Astros basically got zero value out of Pedro Baez, wasting $12.5m over two years, and it was barely a blip on the radar. Bit of an overpay, maybe, just don't see whats worth getting worked up for otherwise.
I'm back here just to say you guys weren't wrong about the relief pitcher market. Eflin, who I don't regard as anywhere near a top end closer, just signed for 3 years, 40 million with the Rays. It's the biggest free agent contract in Ray's history. That's kinda nuts in and of itself.
Well well well...GM Crane wins again. Also, do the Rays plan to start Eflin? No way he's worth that much.
Oh I have no idea why I thought he was in their bullpen. I guess he was the odd man out of the starting rotation in the playoffs. I see he's a very middling pitcher. Not a good signing.
eh, it is a fair price. Look at the deals that clevinger and Boyd got. Eflin is younger and more talented, so the contract seems about right
I dunno, fans will utter the words "What the Eflin is he doing?" a few too many times over the next 3 years.
Zach Britton at age 31 got 3 years 39 million coming off a 2018 season with a 3.10 ERA, 1.230 WHIP, and 4.22 FIP to be the 8th inning guy for the Yankees.
2022 1.0 WAR 3.05 ERA 56.0 IP 2.18 FIP Montero, age 31, 3 years, 34.5M 2022 1.3 WAR, 2.37 ERA, 68.1 IP 2.64 FIP
Jesus what a God awful signing that turned out to be. Be careful giving this much money to relief pitchers. And Britton had a really good track record before that contract.
I’ve seen nothing in FA pitcher contracts to suggest that the Montero deal was a big overpay. Could we haggle and say it’s a touch rich? Maybe. Reasonable minds can disagree whether the Montero deal is better or worse than the Martin or Eflin contracts. Or Boyd or clevinger if we wanna compare apples to oranges. assuming our pitching coaches continue to like Montero, then I’m glad we got him. The man was a part time closer and our staff got the most out of him (yet again). I totally trust their judgment on pitching. They have more than earned it.
He had one good season before joining Houston He got overpaid after one good season in Houston then his clock struck midnight before All-Star break
I know right. Saw the blue check and didn't search more sources Too quick of a trigger to abort so soon
