I’m glad you asked. Right now I am going through albums that I just recently got (like Thin Lizzy, Grand Funk, etc) and also listening to stuff that I have had for awhile like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. But I am concentrating on hard rock and heavy metal with some prog rock thrown in.

    I won't say that

    • Iron Maiden
    • Thin Lizzy
    • Grand Funk Railroad
    • Judas Priest
are all similar, but they all are older stuff which I am familiar with.

There is older stuff such as

    • ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer)
    • Yes
    • Jethro Tull
    • The Moody Blues

that I am familiar with, but don't listen to very much.

I am guessing that most of the music that I don't know is newer than 40 years ago.

Your jumps between timeframes is what made me ask.

I go through stretches where I will listen to several different genres - recently it was punk along with genres influenced by punk such as post-hardcore, post punk, post punk revival, etc. I could change the iPod to reggae with dub, roots, dancehall, etc or to jazz with hard bop, fusion and free jazz. Or even to some soul and funk. But I wanted to concentrate on bands that are heavy on guitar (for the most part) and I do agree with you that a foursome of Grand Funk Railroad, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden seem strange, they are all heavy guitar whether it’s heavy metal or hard rock.

Never heard of them until a read a blurb on their most recent/final album and then dug in a bit further

Houston group BROCKHAMPTON. Mix between rap, r&b, rock. Large mix of guys. Really good stuff.

You continue to make jumps in time.

Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Motor Head etc.

I have been trying to determine what will be next...........but I think it is best to give up because it probably won't be close to right.

Haha - I'm sorry that you haven't been able to figure out the pattern. However, it will continue to be hard rock, prog rock, heavy metal, etc.

This classical flutist has a whole bunch of videos reacting to Ian Anderson playing the flute that I enjoy. One example:

I have a whole recent YouTube sub-genre obsession with classical musicians listening to pop/rock songs for the first time.

I thought about it some more and even if I saw a pattern, you could choose to branch in a different direction with your next post and I would have it wrong because I would be unable to anticipate the change in direction.

Probably a bit broader than Hard Rock because some might be labeled Blues Rock or Southern Rock or Arena Rock, but there are multiple directions that you could go in this exploration of Music.

    John Mayall Bluesbreakers
    Yardbirds
    Johnny Winter
    Alvin Lee
    Edgar Winter
    Black Sabbath
    Kinks
    Cream
    Hendrix
    Mountain
    Faces
    Small Faces
    Grand Funk Railroad
    James Gang
    Blue Cheer
    Iron Butterfly
    Vanilla Fudge
    Uriah Heep
    Cheap Trick
    REO Speedwagon
    Blackfoot
    Humble Pie
    BTO
    Spirit
    AC/DC
    Jeff Beck
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Molly Hatchett
    Robin Trower
    Deep Purple
    ZZ Top
    Steppenwolf
    Free
    Bad Company
    Foghat
    Ted Nugent
    Nazareth
    Rare Earth
    Peter Frampton
