We are getting there. Barry is the only one we tried and he is above average I would say.

No. There are surprisingly quite a few Mike James fans here including (among others) NIKEstrad and myself. I didn't watch James in college but early in the 2003-04 season I became impressed with James while still with Boston vs the Grizz.

It was like the Celtics second game of the season and with the game tied and in it's closing seconds, BOS was clearly going to Pierce after a timeout. Seeing how much attention was being given to Pierce, James calmly drove the paint for a game winning stop and pop. It was the old cliche about ice water in your veins.

James' playoff games as a Piston though not spectacular were pretty solid.

Sorry, but from what I saw of MJ er, James er, Mike James, he is a good prospect for a rotation place, but not as a starter on a team with 'aspirations'.

    xiki- That's a fair assessment I suppose.

Mike James is not the guy I'd want as my first choice, but he is what he is- an above average defender, solid outside shooter, and pretty good AST/TO (career 2.5).

I'd definitely take Mike James over Charlie Ward. I would much rather go in with James and Lue than give a 5+ year MLE level contract to a Derek Fisher or take on Eric Snow's albatross contract.

The guy does the basics- plays defense, takes care of the ball, and hits the open shot even in the clutch. For a reasonable price, which he should get, I think we could live with him for a year, and then try the market again next year (Lue will be a free agent).

Whoa, I would love to get Daniels. Doesn't he lead the nba in assist to turnover ratio? I'll have to check that out.

Could the Rockets add Payton as the final piece of their roster remake? With Barry set to sign with the Spurs and the Sonics, then, opting to hold on to Antonio Daniels, Gary Payton could turn out to be next on Houston's list.

The Rockets have been thwarted again. The San Antonio Spurs garnered the attention of Seattle free agent Brent Barry, who was one of the players the Rockets had targeted as a top free agent priority. Barry would have taken the point guard slot recently vacated by Steve Francis, but the prospect of playing with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili was more than Barry could pass up. The Rockets may be on their way to championship contention, but the Spurs are there right now. Barry made the smart move, but that doesn't help Houston. In fact, it sets them back in more ways than are readily apparent.

The Seattle Sonics were all but ready to make a deal with the Rockets, sending Antonio Daniels to Houston, but that was before they knew what they know now. Originally they felt that letting Barry go in favor of a younger point guard might be the answer, but as point guards have begun to evaporate from the free agent list, they seem to be having second thoughts. The Spurs' agreement with Barry would seem to make Daniels the top candidate to run the Seattle offense next season, and it means the Rockets are still shopping for a starting point guard of their own. I have said many times that I wouldn't mind seeing what Tyronn Lue can do with the starting job, but the Rockets seem determined to go in a different direction.

Derek Fisher has been one of the players consistently mentioned in connection with the Rockets, but his playoff heroics and his consistent play make him one of the more popular point guards for teams in need. Fisher may turn out to be more expensive than the Rockets can afford. The Sonics, Bucks, and Heat are all trying to catch Fisher's eye. Charlie Ward has been pursued by Jeff Van Gundy almost since the day Van Gundy took over the Rockets, but there are questions about whether or not Ward (who beat himself up playing four years of college football) can take the rigors or starting for 82 games at this stage of his career.

There are always other options, right? Well, as it turns out Shaq's departure from the Lakers' front line has left more than a few of his former teammates irked with the Lakers organization. Karl Malone is considering San Antonio and has all but said he would not return to the Lakers if Shaq is dealt. And now the fourth All-Star, Gary Payton, is saying that if Shaq is traded he will demand a buy-out. Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak is quick to say that he will not let Payton go without some compensation, but if Payton truly forces Kupchak's hand it is clear that the Lakers will let him walk. Does this open up yet another intriguing possibility for Houston?

Gary Payton is past his prime. We know this. Watching him play last season was a little like watching Hakeem Olajuwon limp through his last two seasons with the Rockets. He was getting burned by younger point guards and having a hard time holding his own with guys he would have owned five years ago. Still, if Payton is as interested in winning a title as he says he is, Houston would probably be his best bet. The Rockets, having added Tracy McGrady and subtracted Steve Francis (equally important changes), are going to have as good a shot as anyone at landing the trophy next season. Can the Rockets, with Yao Ming and McGrady being the true leaders, find a couple of seasons in Payton's worn out legs? At the very least it is an intriguing possibility.

The HEAT won't have enough money left to even sign someone from the Greenland basketball association.

If Fisher and Karl Malone both go to Miami, that would be a big be-atch slap to Kobe!

Hurry Up and sign whoever you want, it is July 13 already, I hate to see this kind of rumors over again and again. But I really hope Rockets can forget about Fisher!!

    News
Fisher could join Rockets, Heat or Sonics
    July 13
Los Angeles Times (Scroll Down) (registration required): " The Lakers are thumbing through free agents, including a few of their own, such as Malone, Derek Fisher and Slava Medvedenko. Fisher is drawing interest from more than a few places, Houston and Miami among them, and reportedly spent part of the weekend in Seattle."

I wish Fish would sign with Seattle already so we can focus on trading for Daniels again.

Derek Fisher of Lakers pays visit to Sonics
    FRANK HUGHES; The News Tribune

Free agent point guard Derek Fisher visited with the Seattle SuperSonics on Monday, though it did not seem probable that Fisher procured a contract offer.

Fisher, who has spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, flew into Seattle on Sunday night, spent the day Monday with Sonics management and then had dinner with various members of the organization Monday night.

The Sonics have said they want to add a perimeter defender, and with Bruce Bowen and Stephen Jackson gone in free agency, Fisher remains the top free agent available.

The Sonics are able to offer all or part of their mid-level exception, which should be about $5.4 million. Fisher likely is seeking all of that, though there is some question whether the Sonics want to spend their entire exception on one player.

One possibility, according to a team source, is trading Antonio Daniels, who is said to be the object of interest because of his relatively inexpensive $2 million salary. If Daniels is traded, it could free up money for Fisher.

If not, adding Fisher presents a problem in that he would be the fifth guard on a team that had too many guards last season.

However, Sonics coach Nate McMillan has been adamant that he wants a perimeter defender who can set a defensive tone that he hopes will carry through the rest of the team.

The oddity of Fisher visiting Seattle is that he was replaced in the Lakers' starting lineup by former Sonics guard Gary Payton, even though Fisher was the point guard for all of the Lakers' three recent championship teams.

Payton became disgruntled last season because Fisher took the bulk of the minutes in the fourth quarters because he played better on-the-ball defense than Payton.

In eight seasons in Los Angeles, Fisher has averaged 7.4 points, 3.0 assists and 1.03 steals.

Nice find! I think a 6'4" Daniels at 2M next year would be a STEAL for the Rockets at PG! They were talking about looking for VALUE, and this would be it!

That article also talks about Fisher wanting the FULL MLE from Seattle. I am not surprised he would want that considering the likes of Brian Cardinal and Adonal Foyle getting those contracts. But if I am the Rockets I sure as hell would back away from Fisher with those contract demands.

Tough decision, Daniels at 2M for 1 year or Fisher 5yr 39M. Hmm, real tough decision! ;)

I just wonder why SEA would trade Daniels with that salary and sign Fisher for the full MLE. ?

    NIKE - Well said.

I only took a quick look so this may have some errors but next years PG crop includes Andre Miller, Jamaal Crawford (if not extended), Jeff McInnis, Jamaal Tinsley, Marko Jaric, Earl Watson, Damon Stoudamire, Nick Van Exel (sorry Nick, no $12m TOpt), Bobby Jackson, Flip Murray, Steve Blake and Gary Payton.

Like you, I'd rather have short-term and consistent than overpay for average talent in the current GM feeding frenzy. Especially given that there is a new CBA going to be in place and no one knows which teams will throw in the towel before the Feb 2005 trade deadline. I for one am glad to see the Rox exhibit some restraint as opposed to rushing to give Derrick Fisher $24m thru 2008 or Eric Snow $30.5m thru 2009.

You have got to be kidding me. Mike James? Let's bring on Cward while we are at it! I'm not bashing... but Mike James? Who did he play for again? Seriously, if we are signing him to take Tyron Lue's spot next year after he is an FA for about the same money, OK i'll throw in my chips.... but don't settle on this guy to run the team for the next 4 yrs. He is a career backup at best. If it comes down to him or GP ( I cringe at the thought ) Im all in! If the rockets aren't smart enough to see that GP was nothing but a team cancer last year Im callin for some heads!!

Gary Payton reminds me of that LEON guy off the budweiser commercials. JVG= "But Gary there is no I in Team!" GP "Well there ain't no WE either!"

So much for everyone is going to want to play with us now that we have the best one-two punch in the league. I think these free agents don't think we are going to be title contenders for a few years down the road and don't want to wait that long.
