Boba Guys workers dismissed en masse after faceoff with founders
Bubble tea shop with stores in New York City and Los Angeles shutters San Francisco flagship store for now.

The closure came on the heels of an escalating conflict between the Mission store’s employees and the company’s management. On Tuesday, two workers said they were fired for being caught on tape insulting the company’s founder during an in-store chat.

Although it may sound untenable to fire an employee for a conversation, it is, in fact, legal. “They’re at-will employees, so a boss can fire them for any reason, that’s not unlawful,” said Veena Dubal, a professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law.

Looks like the store was failing and things were just spiraling. HR/Owners also may have committed a crime recording without consent. Most likely outcome is the business will fail.

They cut some hours and shifts which everyone is doing, especially in that state.
However it does seem they are extremely popular so the customer loses

Boba is the kind of thing that, if you order something you don't like the first time, you might get the wrong impression. The combos are endless and intimidating. I don't even get anything with added sugar or sugar substitutes.

    from the article
'Although management did not respond to multiple messages from Mission Local, Boba Guys leadership announced in an email to workers that “The Mission location is temporarily closed until we are able to staff a full team to uphold our standards.”'

If they were extremely popular, they probably wouldn't have cut hours. Most restaurants and stores are cutting hours *because* of labor shortages. They also cut hours to the point where it takes longer to make the stuff than they have before they open, so they open with no product. With limited information, the owners seem clueless and have turned a small business into employees vs ownership, which is never going to end well for either.

Several bobaristas (the name for Boba Guys’ entry-level position) who used to work nearly 25 hours a week were given only nine hours, according to Madeline Urso, who was fired on Tuesday. At an hourly rate of $17.52, they found it next to impossible to make ends meet.

Also reduced was the time allotted to open and close the store. Given that boba takes 50 minutes to be fully cooked and must be prepared in advance, the store had no boba to offer for the first 30 minutes of opening, Mission store employee Zander Moreno said.

Good luck to them finding employees willing to work 9/hrs per week for near-minimum wage (min wage in SF is $17) in this labor-shortage world.

They have locations in NYC and other cities, seems that this city is not doing well with the employees and market.

What a snowflake owner. Cant take criticism? Maybe he/she should listen to the criticism. Or, ignore it. Either way, this equates to taking your ball and going home because you're in your feelings.

NOBODY likes ME, I'm gonna CLOSE. Lulz.

    No $14.99 BOBA for you.

Again based on limited information from the article, but it seems these owners lack basic people skills. Without major changes in their atttitudes, their stores will all fail one by one.

Seems to be isolated to one city where the employees feel overly entitled and dumb enough to make insults about the owner while working

Boba Guys began in 2011 as a pop-up by founders Andrew Chau and Bin Chen when the chilled tea drinks featuring chewy tapioca balls were still a novelty in most of the country. Its first brick-and-mortar store opened in 2013, with the chain now in 24 locations across San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
