How an Exclusive Los Angeles Suburb With Multi-Million $ Homes / Mansions Lost Its Whiteness

San Marino, ~15 miles NE of downtown Los Angeles, is an extreme exemplar of a larger process in the region, one that’s accelerated in the past 30 years:
the development of massive suburban enclaves of Asian immigrants in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley.

San Marino is wildly affluent; 70.5 percent of all homes in the city are worth $1 million or more. The median household income is $154,962. In Beverly Hills, it’s $83,463.

San Marino isn’t just affluent, it’s exclusive—and it always has been. For much of its history, San Marino’s exclusivity was both economic and racial.
The city’s moneyed gentility masked a potent undercurrent of racially tinged conservatism.

In 1970, it was 99.7 percent white. Today, by contrast, only 49.8 percent of households in San Marino are headed by whites.
In a few decades, the total population of one of Los Angeles’s most elite and most monochromatic suburbs has become majority-Asian.

I think “whites” certainly have a sense of social and geographic entitlement. It’s amusing since “white” keeps expanding to include new folks. It’s definitely evident with Evangelicals and Christian Nationalists. Listening to my drunk aunt from southern Louisiana scream about how the Indians (from India) are taking over the hotels and stores was enlightening… What she is really upset about is that these other folks are doing better.

Meanwhile, social conservatives have made inroads with minorities/immigrants because they are also usually socially conservative.

I think progressives really missed the mark with their own culture wars and ended up serving too many meatballs down the plate for conservatives.

It's interesting. For quite a while conservatives have been telling us that minorities have all the same opportunities as whites and that they don't discriminate.

This rise of minority populations taking over once white neighborhoods would seem to be an opportunity to celebrate that, yet these conservatives are the ones that feel upset and feel cheated.

It isn't a surprise but they weren't colorblind like they once pretended to be.

It's one reason why it's a better to find honest ways to celebrate and honor some of the differences rather than pretend to be color blind.

Before anyone goes off on a tangent, I don't suggest celebrating misogyny etc. But just finding ways to acknowledge and honor contributions differences.

It shouldn't be hard or upsetting, but for some it is.

Resident of FB County here and I can attest it’s really fascinating to see. My son’s Elementary school and daughter’s gymnastics class is so mixed I could never guess all the ethnicities. The County itself is something like 25/25/25/25 White, Black, Asian, Hispanic.

What I see is children growing up with a true melting pot and not seeing race at all. All they see are friends who have similar goals and interests.

Once their generation starts really intermixing with marriages and kids and the different cultures really get blurred we will see much more tolerance and a lot less bigotry.

Like a lot of problems in the country once enough old people die off we can finally progress as a nation.

FB has been trending to mixed race for a long, long time, though. This isn’t a new phenomenon.

In rural MN these type of cultural changes are very visible. About 15 years ago I stopped in Worthington,MN in the SW corner and there wasn’t a non white to be seen and had a meal at the local diner eating pot roast and mash potatoes. A couple of years ago I stopped by there and had dinner at a tacqueria where they were blasting Tejano music and Spanish was spoken more than English.

Many Hispanics who worked agriculture and meat packing used to just be seasonal labor but have started settling in many communities. Along with them Somalis have and other immigrants have started moving to rural communities while Hmong who came here as war refugees are moving out to suburbs and exurbs as they get more affluent. Rural Minnesota has alway distrusted the cities and the events of 2020 reinforced in many that the Twin Cities were dangerous hell holes full of dark people. Now those dark people are moving out to their communities and there is a backlash. That led to the election of Michelle Bachman and the rise of people like Mike Lindell.

One of the big reasons I loved back to h-town from BFE NW of Fort Worth was because it was so utterly whitebread. I didn’t want my son growing up there. Was super pleased when we got back and his class was as you described it.

Cupertino is another example of this. Back in the 70’s it was mostly white and Hispanic. By the late 90’s it is almost all Chinese of people both from Taiwan and the PRC. When I helped relatives move in 1998. All of their neighbors came out to greet them in Mandarin. A friend if mine’s grandmother got a condo their and until she passed away got along fine their even though she only spoke mandarin.

Well I've been getting maidens from the grasslands of North America so am living up to my 1/8th Mongolian heritage.

Although people have frowned upon me threatening to put Mankato, MN to the sword.

This highlights what I mean: going from an English or Spanish speaking community to a Mandarin speaking community. The speakers become outsiders at no fault of their own.

Just telling you why NYT mentions Fort Bend.

Outsiders might be overstating it. If you've been living in a place for a long time, you'll have your job, your network of friends, your church, etc. So long as your peeps aren't moving out, no harm in others moving in.

I've lived and been to a lot of places.... I would be hard pressed to find a better country to live in. There are parts of other countries that are better, but not overall. For example, there is even more racism against black people in Europe than in the USA. The fact that the USA is good in a lot of ways doesn't mean it cannot be improved though and that point gets lost.

So, what is starting to happen is that the "ruling class" is being called "white" and they are not always going to necessarily be viewed the same.

I hear and ready a lot about "the white majority" is lost or gone, and it really isn't that simple.

For a long time, Catholics were not considered white..... then the Irish were not considered white.... then it was Germans and a hundred years ago it was Italians, Jews and Eastern Europeans..... right now all of these groups of people are considered part of the white ruling class. 60 years ago, Cubans were not considered white, and now Cubans are often lumped into being white.

Mexicans and Hispanics in the USA are often marrying white people, and are starting to be included with the white majority - just like we see with Italians and Jews.

So, this idea of a revolution isn't so certain - the white majority adapts, and there are growing pains, but a ruling class largely labeled as white emerges.

20% of the USA is Hispanic, and with time it is acculturating and mixing with the white mixing pot that we have.

We even have people that are half Indian or Middle Eastern being absorbed by this weird blob of people we call the white majority.

It's a function of diversity. Homogenous monocultures tend to "circle the wagons" around protecting that monoculture. Also, in that culture they don't need to have skills regarding how to deal with people who are different, because they normally don't in every day life.

If a Japanese person tells a racist joke about blacks, or Jews or whatever to a room full of other Japanese people, who is there to get offended and demonstrate why those jokes are bad.
