I actually read the article after JR posted the archive of it. It's really less to do with comparing what he does against what a computer would do and more comparing what he did against how a chess player typically progresses in skill, but also looking at his live streams of the games in question and noticing that he was tabbing off to another screen frequently and, lo and behold, the moves where he tabbed off were much more effective than the moves where he didn't.

When they confronted him he admitted to the online cheating. He hasn't admitted to the over-the-board cheating, but I would think based on his willingness to cheat in online tourneys when money is at stake, Magnuss has good reason to be suspicious of the guy suddenly getting really really good. The guy has a history of cheating as does his instructor. The odds that he found a way to cheat in the over-the-board game are way better than him suddenly increasing in skill enough to beat the best like Magnussen.
