Disintegration is a damn near flawless album. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me was my middle school soundtrack. Think I’ve watched the concert in Orange a hundred times or more. Not sure I’d put them as the best - but they are consistent rotation. I’d have to side with Jomama on The Beatles. They broke so much ground and changed their aesthetic multiple times while not compromising on quality. there’s no Friday I’m in Love in the Beatles catalogue.
Friday I'm in Love really hurts their standing. That song is such garbage and sad since they are obviously capable of so much more
i agree with your first sentence. but although i think its the worst song on wish, i wouldnt call it garbage...its a catchy radio-friendly great pop song. its just weird that robert smith wrote it. they have always embraced the pop side of things and their music has tons catchy melodies and hooks. in between days, lovesong, just like heaven, ect - cure had lots of radio hits, but nothing as overt as friday im in love.
No, it's Pavement. The Cure would probably be in my top 25 for sure. Maybe even top 15 or 10 if I thought about it for a while.
Is "the Cure" the greatest band ever? No. Is "Jaws" the greatest movie ever? No. Jaws (or whatever) is a really great movie. The Cure is a really great band.
There is no such thing as the greatest band of all time, because music (like all art) is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. If you love the Cure more than any other band, then they are the greatest band (to you). Also:

The Cure is Robert Smith. So not sure I really think of them as a band. Kind of like how Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor. But as a music act or artist, they are one of the greatest but not the best of all time. Mainly because of the duds Smith has released in between masterpieces. I think in order to dethrone the Beatles you have to have no weakpoints in your discography and leave on a strong note. The Beatles leaving at their high point does the trick from a legacy standpoint just like Breaking Bad did as a TV show. Id rank them in the top 10 though behind: Beatles Radiohead Pink Floyd Zeppelin Stones Beach Boys However The Beach Boys has alot of the same issues that the Cure has with overstaying their welcome and in those years not even having their Robert Smith primary song writer even in the band anymore. Still… I have to give them the nod over the Cure just barely.
The name of the band sounds familiar, but I couldn't name a single song by them if asked. I am familiar with The Beatles though. They're good.
