Hats off to Jeff for taking care of the little pup. Most of us would have just kept on riding. It takes real compassion to do what he did. I can't take on any more animals, but I'd be happy to contribute to the vet or kennel costs.
Just looking online at Staffordshire Terriers, she kinda looks like this: I seriously doubt she is any pure breed and she has floppier ears than the Staffordshires have, but this is a pretty good representation. About that size as well.
Beagles are more aggresive than Pit Bulls? That can't be right.. Edit: Ok, now I see how they got those results. The tested 446 Pit Bulls and only 55 Beagles.
Man, you're the second person in as many weeks with a story like this. If I didn't already have 2 (rescued) dogs, I'd jump on this in a heartbeat. But unfortunately, the neighbors already think 2 is 2 too many. Kudos for the effort & resources spent already. I'm sure you'll find a good home for that little b!tch
wow jeff... i just have to say... you're a good person. not a lot of people will take so much care of a stray animal as you.
Thanks. Mrs JB and I have rescued and found homes for more than 70 cats and dogs over the past 5 years. Probably more than that, but we lost count. Many of them were litters of cats that were born under or around our house. Fortunately, all of the outdoor females around here have subsequently been caught and spayed, which is why we haven't had the need to adopt any out for a while. We probably can foster her for a while, but we can't keep her inside with the cats, so she gets to stay in our office which is separate from the house. I just have to go out and clean up out there so she doesn't tear up everything, which of course puppies have a tendency to do.
I think now is an appropriate time to shamelessly promote my sig. Meanwhile, I'm monitoring this thread closely. I feel bad for this dog.
637 Golden Retrievers, 623 Black Labs, 4423 Rottweilers and so on. Anyone interested in it, please go check out the site. Please go out and find information with an open mind and leave your bias behind. Ask your veterinarian, go to the bookstore, look on the interent ect ect.
If possible, make the person adopting the dog pay some nominal fee of at least $50. There are supposed stories of people who take "free" dogs and then sell them for animal experiments. I don't know if this is true, but that's what my wife told me.
We've done that before. In this instance, we hope to find someone we know (directly or indirectly). If we can't, we'll go through CAPS or Special Pals.
Unfortunately Special Pals is closing I haven't been up there to see them, but I saw a message posted on a bulletin board here. It's too bad. I worked there for a few years as a volunteer, and it did a great service. I think poor publicity both in bad publicity (from some incidents in the early 00s), plus a lack of communication and fund-raising with donors really hurt them. I know I donated money several times and never got anything later asking me to donate more. I'd have definitely done it!
This thread is breaking my heart. Please oh please, some CC person adopt this wonderful dog. We would, all the way from the west coast, but we cannot have a dog right now in our yardless-wunder-home-mit-cats. By the way, I hate to go down this road, but I (as a total dog lover) have to disagree with what people have been posting about pit bulls only being mean due to their owners. The statistics are overwhelming, despite many nice individual cases: they are simply more likely to attack humans. Owning a pitbull is cool by me, but don't pretend like you have a lab when you're in a park with little kids running around. Please keep 'em on the leash. Peace.
I'm going to pick her up in just a bit. I'll post some photos tonight. I've passed the word on to my family and friends that if anyone wants a pup, we have one.
It is female right? I might be interested in adopting. Only problem is I'm leaving on vocation on the 15th of this month, which doesn't leave much time for it to get along with my other dog, a female black lab. Anyway, pls reply here or email me at mwsliang@hotmail.com, I would definitely be interested.
Again, an aside, I am currently fostering a very sweet, fat, lazy female cat who needs a home. Our son is allergic and the wife has tasked me with getting her out of the house by this weekend. I don't want her to go to the SPCA, but may have no other choice...
Just to recap... She is appx 5-6 months old. She is a lab mix but not sure what the other breed is - possibly a terrier or maybe a boxer. Has a little bit of the barrel chest but the coloring of a yellow lab. She has all her vaccinations and has been checked out with no heartworms. She is taking pain medication that will last for about another week - twice a day. She also has one more dose of her de-worming medication and, like all dogs, heartworm stuff. The vet included some Advantage for fleas. The splint she is wearing will need to be changed in a week to allow for her growth. The vet said she had a clean break through the ulna and part of the radius. She thinks that the dog suffered the injury a couple weeks ago but the bone is mending well. She'll need the splint for two weeks total. As for her personality, she has a typical puppy personality. She loves people and licks and occassionally nibbles, but she is very docile for a puppy and responds VERY well to vocal reprimands ("NO!") as well as treats. She does well on a leash, though she'll need to be trained. She loves to chew on her bones, which is good because she won't chew on anything else. She likes to be around people. She cries a bit when put up but eventually goes to sleep. She had NO problem with the cats and has been very calm around other dogs, just sniffing and wanting to play. I have not heard her growl ONCE at anything or anyone. She is NOT housebroken. We are going to keep her in a small room (a bathroom) at night to try and help with paper training, etc. We don't have a crate or we'd try to crate train her. We are more than willing to help out with the vet expenses throughout her recovery. Our vet is great and has given us discounts since she is a stray. We would like to ensure that whoever takes her gets her neutered as well. Oh, and her name is Ruby.
