What "free win"? Even if the Texans failed to make the first down, the Colts wouldn't be in FG range....and their kicker just missed a gimmie a few minutes beforehand. The game likely still ends in a tie even if the Texans go for it and fail.
The fact that they punted instead of going for it says a lot. It was actually the right call (not in general, but for this team). They already tried their bread and butter play in handing it off to burkhead against a stacked box on 3rd and shocker…it didn’t work. Pep’s playbook is literally just pages and pages of different ways mills can get the ball to Rex, that’s not really the type of cache of plays that screams a critical 4th down conversion. If by some miracle we did pick up that 1st, we would have just ran the clock out anyways handing it off to burkhead the following 2 downs. Lovie knew all of this and just saved us all grief of having to endure that so he punted it.
Rex Burkhead, lol. Playcalling with a lead, lol. I don't think the play-calling was in anyway special or even good. The last 3rd down play. The 3rd down defensive call in overtime where the LB f'd up the zone coverage. I'm not sure how in 2022 NFL coaches still go to supremely conservative playcalling offensively and defensively when they have a lead and expect to win games, but whatever.
Texans started 2018 0-3. Game 4 looked destined for a tie as the Colts were in the Texans position today. They went for it on 4th down, failed, and Texans hit the game winning FG. Texans won 9 games in a row somehow.
Get used to it. Lovie is the king of conservative. He'll ride or die with that "no big play" defense.
It doesn’t matter the coordinator except maybe wade, but Texans late game defense is always super soft and it’s maddening to watch. I understand the whole bend don’t break concept but allowing an easy12 yards a play because we are giving them underneath stuff all day is just as bad as giving up a big play
The 4th and 3 you should be pissed about is when the Texans were up 20-3. It would have been a 53 yard FG.. They punted. That is the one you should be pissed about.
dude, I'm talking about OT and what was happening at the current time.. After Davis got sack fumbled in the 4th the whole game changed. Of course you want them to win up 20-3 in the 4th. but the circumstances were changing second to second.
Obviously personnel matters more than coaching across basicalyl every sport, but football, and especially NFL football, is the sport where coaching probably matters the most. The reason it always appears the same, year after year, is cause every coach takes the same approach, year after year. Bend but don't break. Playing not to lose. Etc. Tbf, sure there is validity to it. The extreme opposite is just as bad if not worse - see Bill O'brien against the Chiefs in the playoffs. Personally, if I was a coach, I'd do neither, but rather mix it up as much as possible, on a play by play basis.
I didn't watch the game... But if we "played for the tie" that's pretty stupid given the expectations on the season.
I've never understood how other team's defenses are able to harden up against the Texans late in games whereas the Texans become 10 ply. It's been the same story for years. No matter the coach and/or defensive coordinator, the Texas have NEVER been able to pull off the prevent defense. Much less the Patriots 'step-on-the-neck and put the game out of reach' 4th quarter offense.
Yeah, I understand having faith in Rex in certain situations, but what I don't understand is not giving DP more touches. If you're going to run on 3rd and 1, why not give it a Pierce who has a much greater chance of making something out of nothing.
There was a Texans game I went to where someone had left their tent open and unattended. Thunderstorm rolled through during the game and the tent busted out the back window of a nice car. Rain water poured into the car.
