Not all criminals are equal and not all criminals have the same motivation.

Having said that, one of the best things Bill Clinton did was pass the crime bill. The USA was safer for it.

Violent criminals with a track record shouldn’t be let out.

Memphis is no joke when it comes to violent crime. I'm used to the Southside of Chicago and I'd still watch my back in Memphis.

Not sure why the police captured him alive, should have just gunned him down.

I am in favor of rehabilitation for those without a track record of violence, but if you are a pedophile or you have a history of repeated violence, you don't even need to get out.

It isn't coincidence that once the Crime Bill passed that violent crime went down.

    What was his bond for?
(Having a bond is a constitutional right. I believe.)

The one you're thinking of is the Reagan era drug bill.

Ok. Maybe. I was sure the 1994 Crime bill doubled down on it
or was this the dreaded 3 Strikes Bill
    strike 1: stealing food
    strike 2: Stealing food
Strike3: Stealing food = Life in Prison

I don't agree with everything in the Clinton Crime Bill. For one thing, it is approaching 30 years old and changes need to be made. I don't think that people should be incarcerated for petty drug possession and I think that people that have simple convictions early in their life for theft, drug possession, even simple drug dealing should have their records automatically cleared after not having a conviction after a long period of time.

A lot of the issue was that in the 1960's and 1970's there were a lot of dangerous violent criminals that were released from prison after serving a sliver of their sentences. There were murderers being let out in Texas and California after only a dew years because of overcrowding. I know of at least two people on death row that were released and killed more people. One of them, Kenneth Allen McDuff was a serial killer and ended up being on death row twice. The crime rate was very high.

Since then crime has gone down a great deal across the board. I don't think it is a coincidence.

Having said that, not all crime is equal. I do not think that non violent criminals need to be incarcerated for a long time. A simple corner drug dealer, someone that breaks into cars should be in prison. Drug users should not be in prison either. Simple drug possession should result in treatment and not incarceration.

Having said that, people that have committed multiple violent crimes shouldn't be let out IMO. I worked for the federal government as a prosecutor and I saw the good and the bad of it. I saw how black neighborhoods in Chicago were destroyed because they arrested everyone for possession and how that resulted in unemployment, which resulted in theft and low level drug dealing.... which resulted in gun violence and young black men in jail.... and children not having fathers. The neighborhoods where the high level GD's and BD's came from, that I prosecuted..... there were literally no men their between 20 and 50 years old. About 2/3 of those fathers and husbands and sons didn't need to be incarcerated, it was for small things..... the other 1/3 don't ever need to get out, because it was for murder and usually multiple murders.

Resources need to be put into play when people are younger and not in trouble yet.

Having said that, they have started letting more of these guys out of jail that have been in prison for decades, many of them now with strong gang ties and no employment prospects. It is going to cause problems..... and we are going to see people over correct and want to get "tough on crime".
