I don't know why so many people are trashing this (probable) signing. Brent Barry can run the break, doesn't turn the ball over, gets the ball right where it has to be (i.e., in Yao's hands) and can shoot lights-out from the 3.

Used well, he can be productive for his throughout the four years of the deal.

As far as defense, I'm sure we're not done dealing yet, anyway, so let's chill.

I would have liked to get Arroyo, but as was pointed out, to sign him to an offer sheet, then lose him, and then not have BB available to sign....not smart.

CD is doing what he must, and I finally commend him for an excellent off-season.

(Still got work to do; how about that backup center? Battie? I'll take him.)

Lets not just get infatuated w/a single stat? Please. Especially with a young PG that just getting used to the starting position...

And yes, we've seen him play. He runs the fast-break, plays smart, gets others involved, has low turnovers. This is on a team, the jazz, that really doesn't have a star. But put him on the Rox, where his job will be supported my McGrady and Yao. The benefits of this PG skills in running the court will be great on our team. He can hit from 21 feet in pretty well. But, still, you have to look at the complete player. Plus he's still improving. His outside shot will improve.

Also note that last year was the FIRST time Arroyo has received any substantial minutes (28 per game). Before that he was it was backup minutes to Stockton. So, give him time to condition himself for his increased minutes. This is why there are those fans that know how good he will become just by seeing him last year. There are telltale clues about players that show their abilities even if you only see them a few times. It's not about a single stat. I mean, it's not like if that single stat is going to stay the same his whole career. It wont. He'll improve. He's young and smart.

Off topic, but I'd just like to point out that Stevie's D was not that bad last season. He actually played very well, man-to-man, though he did commit a few stupid fouls.

Steve's problem was that he would try to rotate over and help, and then get confused and lose his assignment, who would nail a wide open three. But opposing PGs did not beat Steve off the dribble nearly as much as they had in previous years.

don't get me wrong, im all for signing brent barry. but isn't the reason we are fretting is that he would be too slow? But i agree that his height would provide disruption. Hopefully JVG can work his magic

    This was a long read.

Barry is a good signing, if we can get him. Don't care if it's 3 or 4 years. He is good for at least 3 but sometimes, you overpay a little to get the best fit.

As for the Arroyo, I haven't seem him play and he is in his first year so it's understandable. But the Restricted FA part is not good. You will have to way overpay and hope Utah won't match. Also, they can take their time and mess things up for the Rockets. Too big a chance to take. Utah also lost a young prospect to the Bobcats in the expansion draft so it'll be egg in the face for the Jazz if they let one of their own better FA go for "fair market value".

Have you guys thought about the "throw-in" from the T-Mac/Steve trade? Is that R Gaines any good? Didn't Arroyo start looking good after getting real playing time? What if the Magic wasted him on the bench?? Of course it's unlikely this is the case and that he's nothing more than a bench player in the NBA. But after one year, can you say "bust" on the guy yet? Much like can you say "bust" after 2 years for Boki? I won't.

So a very good for the next 2 years at least Barry is just fine for the Rockets, thank you.

BTW, if he comes via TE and the Rockets give up a 1st round pick, it's OK. What's the chance of getting a real PG with a late 1st round pick anway?

Methinks Rockets2K is a Grizzlies fan! First of all, I have the right to say whatever the hell I want! NEWSFLASH...this is an open forum! I did not say anything worse than some of the posts I have read on this board. I was only having a little fun... I am a true Rockets fan and it un-nerves me that some of you are actually standing up for Memphis X. This is the same guy/girl who bashed our beloved team last season! I mean what kind of idiot has the nerve to find a Rockets fan page and go out of his way to piss off the members. But if it is an apology you are after, I am man enough to do that... I am truly sorry for bashing a Rockets hater. I will never do that again. Next time he says "The Rockets suck a$$ and have no future", I'll just agree with him! Now please excuse me while I go church and ask god to spare my life.

As for having no clue, I'm sorry I'm not as big a computer dork as you are "griffinfan." I just thought we could have some fun and make a forum where we could give Rockets haters a hard time. All I wanted to do was give "our guys" a chance to rub it (the McGrady deal) in "their face."

    Word of advice:

This may be an "open forum" , but it is privately run.

Translation: You don't have the right to spout off and act like a jack ass when you feel like it.

This is Clutch's BBS. He does what he damn well pleases and the vast majority here respect him and his right to do just that. R2K, codell and company were actually trying to do you a favor. Since you're too immature to figure out that you're busy "buying" yourself a ticket out of here, I suppose I'll say adios now, while I have the chance.

I would guess you're doomed, fella.

I know that fantasy basketball rankings don't translate into true ability but I think it is interesting to note that Barry's fantasy numbers have always been pretty good through the years. That's due to the fact that he does everything pretty well. He shoots great percentages, he can hit the 3, he get's steals and boards and he can dish out the assist. All in all, I think we will be solid at the point, if he signs with Houston.

Thanks for the advice/translation! I'll keep that in mind. Like I said, I was trying to have some fun at Memphis X's expense... don't take it so seriously.

Again I say this... I've seen much worse on this website and those jokers are still around. If the "admins" have any common sense, they will know this was not meant to be "hurtful." If you wanna take that as an apology, then so be it.

Alright, lets drop this. This thread is supposed to be about Brent Barry and I obviously struck a cord with some of you. So if anyone cares to know my thoughts on Barry, here goes.

Fox Sports has him listed as the 2nd best F.A. available, behind Nash. He's even way ahead of Fisher, which they ranked #7. Personally, as long as our point guard is durable, plays some D and can dish the ball, I don't care who we get. Barry would be good. Fisher would be good. Maybe Damon Jones (The Bucks)... he is from Houston.

After listening to all the talk about age and contracts, the only 2 ages and contracts that matter are Yao and McGrady. As long as you keep those 2 signed, its all just about putting quality role players around them.

I definitely like this signing more than Fisher. Barry has so much more experience starting in the NBA. Frankly, I think Barry is a lot more athletic than Fisher is too, heck, didn't he win a slam dunk competition. Barry's size is going to create a lot of matchup problems too. Barry is a solid shooter and a smart player. He is definitely not a defensive liability either considering he's usually among the top 10 in steals.

    Great signing!

I was watching my Fox Sports Report and it had on the bottom line reporting the Rockets have offered Brent Barry 4 years 40 million. I could not believe it when I read it, that they would offer him that much just to make sure they get him, also it's obvious we will be using our trade exception to get him.

    Ok, that's insanely stupid.

But it absolutely fits the profile of Carroll Dawson.

10M a year? That can't be right! We would have to trade our 6.9M T.E. + someone like Piatkowski or Spoon to make that work salarywise.

I just dont see us doing that. No way.

Does anyone know if the Brent barry news is true? no media in Houston has it on their web sites. I don't live in H-Town, so I don't see the tv there, but Chronicle and other sites mention nothing of this deal. I hope its true news, but could be bad info. any response? thanks. AC
