He's been used out of the bullpen on occasion for long relief in Sugar Land this year, so it won't be new to him.
An OPS of 150 or more is excellent and 125 very good, while an OPS of 75 or below is poor. .340 OBP is solid, .360 is very good, and significantly higher than .360 is great, with an on base percentage of .400 or higher being generally exceptional. Both are significantly down from last year for Yuli.
you are giving him OPS+ examples, not OPS. A solid OPS starts at .800 or so. As a guide, you want your 1st baseman to achieve at least that number in regular OPS. .780 is probably bare minimum for a hitting position like 1b.
I can do this: Bundy is a RH who has a FB @only 7% in MLB avg velocity. 50% fastballs, 41.7% breaking balls, and 8.3% change ups. He is a pitcher who does not Strikeout or walk many and allows more flyback balls than ground balls. I would classify him as a finess, flyball pitcher. 1) CF: both Meyers and Dubon have OPS well below .600 vs both RHP and finess pitchers. That means Chas plays CF. 2) with Chas in CF that means Yordan in LF, Mancini DH, and Yuli at 1B. Yuli is better vs RH finess pitchers than either Meyers or Dubon. 3) while Vazquez is simply a better hitter than Maldy in general, I still advocate a 67%/33% split in Maldy's favor due to intangibles. However Vazquez kills fly ball (.784 OPS) and finess (.860 OPS) pitchers so this match up is too good to sit him. Lineup: Altuve 2B Gurriel1B Alvarez LF Bregman 3B Tucker RF Mancini DH Vazquez C Pena SS McCormick CF. Let's see how Dusty does
You may be a bit high there. Pena has an OPS of 708 and according to Baseball Reference is exactly league average 100 OPS+. But I agree your 1B should be well above average, not .677 where Yuli is. ( FYI Mancini is .741)
It depends on season and position. League averages are 0.312 and 0.707 this year. I'd consider good to be 0.330 and 0.750, respectively and without regard to position. Tucker, Alvarez, Bregman, Altuve, Brantley would grade out better than good by my standard for OPS. Chas, Vasquez, and Mancini as good for the season. Diaz and Pena around league averages. Other Astros with more than 100 PAs are below average by OBP and OPS for the season. Gurriel did have a couple of months of average to above average OBP, OPS in June and July.
So you are cherry picking 3 weeks? Everyone goes through slumps. Do you know had a worse OPS than Yuli for the same period. I'll give you a hint. He's a MVP candidate and should win a silver slugger award.
Not cherry picking, just what he has done the most recently. And sure, he isn't alone in having a down August.
Astros with their beat record after 124 games: 79-45. What is Dusty doing? He should be better! Mancini and Vazquez everyday in every way!
Do you know how many players have an OPS above .800 right now in both leagues? Forty. Above .800 isn't just solid it's d@mn good.
Magic number 27 ( vs Mariners) for ALW division 5 eliminates A's 13 eliminates Angels 17 eliminates Rangers. If the Astros go 19-19 the rest of way the Mariners will need to go 32-7 to win. Magic number 35 ( vs Yankmees) for best record in AL. I love this time of year.
I guess Vasquez will pitch hit if needed. I wish he was starting. Pitchers probably prefer certain catchers like Verlander.
I was about to post the same thing. OPS above .800 is typically all star level. I'd say a "good" OPS is over .700, but under .800.
