This guy is the next Royce white at this point

I can’t think of a worse draft pick since then. Does anyone here believe that he’ll even get minutes this season?

he’s fat, unathletic, dumb, and unskilled

    can him already

    *Draft pick doesn’t contribute immediately*
“What is even the point of him? Cut his ass!”

They added 7 draft picks the last two years.
Maybe they won’t hit on all 7.
As long as they hit on their Top 3 picks…

OK, and he doesn’t work out? He was the 23rd pick.
“Yeah but we should have taken Quentin Grimes or Bones Hyland or Herb Jones or Ayo Dosunmu or Cam Thomas! Grrr!”
“Yeah, but he’s wasting a roster spot that could go to…Boban? Willie Carley Stein? Marquese Chriss? “Well anyone! Anyone is better than UsFatman Garuba! He sucks and is wasting a roster spot! Cut him already!”

The point of him? He is at least supposed to be an elite defender - that‘s what he was in Europe. Best case scenario: he also developes a good 3pt shot and can be a 3&D player than can defend 2-5 while also stretching the floor.

I don‘t know if he will be that player - but every team needs role players like that. Taking a chance with the 22nd pick is fine by me. But I do hope he gets playing time this year and improves his conditioning and that the game will slow down for him.

    Teenager with defensive potential.

Exactly the type of players a team with elite offensive talents like Green and Sengun should be swinging on.

Stone has done to good of a job in draft if one is upset about 25% of the draft class not getting playing time after one season. He is a kid that hasn’t been in America for a year yet. His team plays on the world level and travels across the country a lot. He needs time to adjust, or may not make it at all. Who knows? I was happy on draft night that we picked him so I will wait and hope it all comes together for him & us.

Garuba has a few skills that the Rockets can take advantage of in small amounts. For one he can play excellent defense. In a close game trying to get a stop he SHOULD be one of the 5 guys on the floor to shut down the opposing team. On the Offensive end he is good at reading the floor and moving the ball. He needs to stay mobile and keep moving to find an open cut to the basket or pickup a follow-up dunk in order to get his points. Essentially, he should be playing lockdown defense and then crashing the offensive boards until he can get a reliable shot. He's capable of both those things.

    You are uninformed.

Lack of skills did not make Royce White fail, himself and his mental issues. He was pretty skilled.

I do not see the connection there.

Euros who do not work out, that's fine.

Too soon to tell really. He's definitely not dumb or unskilled on the court. His defense alone proves that. He was a bit overweight last year and it showed in his game, but he's not fat. If you watch his tape from 20-21 he's no crazy athlete, but I wouldn't say he's unathletic. He moves well for his size.

Would have been nice to see him in summer league. Has his conditioning improved? How much time has he spent working on his 3? Once he develops that shot and gets lean, more explosive, he'll be at least a good defensive backup 4/5.

I’m super annoyed by what is see as a trend of being overweight. I suspect it translates into higher risk of injuries and certainly poor conditioning. I don’t think that’s what u want to see out of a 1st round pick. That said, I’d like to see him on the court for a season before I pass rash judgement on his future. If he can become an elite defender and rebounder, which is why we drafted him, he’ll have been worth the pick. Let’s see him on the court before we decide he’s a bust.

Haven’t seen much of Garuba, except about hearing how he’s a bust by a few too many posters.

i guess the Rockets will make the ultimate assessment, and perhaps trade him to recover some value if they think he isn’t going to reach anywhere near his potential. Sometimes a change of scenery is all that is needed to get a career back on track.

I would agree that he's looking like the miss if the 2021 draft for Stone. BUT, there are several reasons why that might be apart from he just is not an NBA player (youth, transition to new country/language, NBA speed, injury). Let's revisit this in a few months.

I'm rooting for Garuba to crack the rotation as a backup PF to Jabari Smith, but it seems unlikely since we have too many forwards. Garuba wasn't even in the schedule reveal video. More than likely he'll be used as a trade piece next year when we go after a free agent.
