We are one of those unfortunate teams. With Jim Jackson 6"6 and Howard 6"8.

I wish we could get a shorter contract but its hard to speculate if this is a good trade without properly understanding our true alternatives (ex. fisher, arroyo etc.).

But if the choice is Barry or NOTHING, then I vote YES.

But i feel that the bigger objective should be finding a bruiser PF/backcenter because we are REALLY gonna miss Cato. Yao is not ready to single handedly defend our basketball. Thus, if we are going to PAY heavily for someone, I would rather see it invested in a (mo taylor trade for Brian Grant/Antonio Davis) than to splurge on Brent Barry.

    The problem with Arroyo is:

    1) Utah can mathch it if the offer is cheap.
    2) You have to give Utah two weeks to decide whether match or not. But then both Barry and Fisher are probably taken or committed to other agreements.

If we want a quality pg, and we do want one, we better make an offer that is not likely to be matched, 'cause all of them are going for crazy money one way or the other.

Damn, so many suckers this year to drive up the prices.

I assumed Doc was referring to the post just before his... meaning it was something he could have posted himself. But with Doc, who knows?? ;)

I've been voting for Barry in the various polls and saying how much I want him in the different threads about getting a point. I just freaked when I saw the contract #'s we're most likely to shell out. After reading some fine stuff in here, I'm convinced it's worth it.

Hell, we've been moaning and growning about the lack of BB IQ on this team for years now. We've wanted height in the backcourt. We want a guy back there who's money from downtown. Pike is much more one-dimentional than Barry and lost his shot, whether because of injury or not... he lost his shot. Barry is more than money from the line, he's Fort Knox. He can pass the rock to TMac and Yao over defending 1's. And he's one hell of a smart player.

We're raising the intelligence of the team, folks. We're going to see a brand of BB that will have us doing backflips with joy. We'll have an array of options to keep an opposing team tied up in knots and will give their coaches sleepless nights.

Let's sign him up and then get a good backup for Yao. We can live with Howard and Taylor at the 4 next season. Heck, Howard may surprise the hell out of us and be better than decent. I'm excited already and I'm getting more excited, which is scary!

He'll only have one year left on his contract. And how do you know that he wouldn't be productive at age 36? And how do you know that the Rockets wouldn't trade him in a year or two? You make it seem like he'll be a broken down old man at age 36.

Actually, the frontline is 6-9 and 7-5. You can't count Jim Jackson and Howard as the frontline, that's the SF and PF spot.

CD gone crazy. Dont know if he will hold up for 4 years. But u can trade him after 3. But i rather get someone young like arroyo. However, jazz will probably match.

We already did this when we unloaded Francis & Mobely, but more intelligence is welcome. :D

Utah is going to match the offer for Arroyo. After that, what young PGs are there out there? Yao and McGrady are young, no need to pass up on veteran help and get younger just for the sake of getting younger.

I’ll reserve judgment on this move until I see what other moves the Rockets plan to make.

I find it very hard to believe that Van Gundy would be OK with Barry guarding opposing point guards. He’s said in the past that he’s never considered playing Francis at the 2 because defensively it would be such a mismatch for Steve. Well, Barry guarding point guards would be the same mismatch.

I fully expect the Rockets to find another guard to play next to Barry that can guard the opposing teams point guard. It can be David Wesley, Kittles, Sura, Hudson, even Cat Mobley. But no way do I want to see Barry guarding point guards.

If they don’t do that, then at the very least they’re going to have to get a shotblocker to play next to Yao or else Yao’s going to be in foul trouble very often trying to contest point guards that have blown by Barry.

If this is the only transaction the Rockets make this summer, then I don’t like this signing at all.

    You know what I mean.

If no moves follow the signing of Barry to compensate for his defense.

That deal is fine. After reading the thread and having general knowledge on Brent Barry, it's clear he's the best PG for us. The Rockets competing only in 2-3 years off is nonsense, the Rockets will be seriously challenging for the Western Conference title this next season. I just hope Barry stays uninjured and that contract will be worth it.

Likely. However I wonder -- are they trying to do a SnT to get an asset back while letting go a guy who is duplicated with others on the roster? Would a 6-year deal starting at 3 make them say, 'See ya'? Of course, an East team may be responded with differently than a West (tho different divisions now, yes?).

Think back 6 months ago. We were all moaning about Francis and Mobley, they cant play together, they dont know how to run a fast break, they arent good passers, they cant hit the outside shot, they have low basketball IQ etc.

And now fast forward back to today.

The idea of changing out our back court of Francis and Mobley for Tracy McGrady and Brent Barry?? I mean, talk about a wet dream!

Raise your hands if you thought that was going to be possible! ;)

It seems like we maybe using the MLE with this trade, but in another thread it said we might be using the TE.

I would rather use the MLE to get a backup PF\C that is defensive minded. Finding a bigman with the TE could be a little more difficult since it would have to involve a sign and trade and there are not that many unwanted bigmen on other teams. Decent bigmen in this league are a rare commodity these days and the lack of one other then yao is a real concern.
