24-year-old nut with a knife attacks a 75-year-old writer. Writer lives, becomes more popular, more people learn about his work. Nut goes to prison and is known as the guy who couldn’t take out an unarmed elderly man. One of the worst L’s I’ve ever seen.

Well I guess that bloke should not have named Hindus. Scary what's going on in India. Quite the craziness with treatment of women and minorities of other religions. Hope the news gets out more ..it's quite mainstream there to be intolerant.

As far Rushdie is concerned, hope he recovers. Violence for any reason should be unacceptable, hope we get there one day.

I think persecution is less of an issue in India than in the surrounding states. Though a BJP spokeswomen made a comment that Muslims considered insulting. She had to apologize, was suspended, and now is facing death threats:

The treatment of women by many there is deplorable, but I don’t think any of the thugs that engage in rape are using their religion as an excuse.

There was a study out of the UK about how the majority of places will not rent out to Muslims/dhalits (hopefully I’m saying that right??), even in major cities like Delhi etc. i looked it up and apparently it’s pretty well known. India has become an extremely intolerant country.

"Strong evidence" of discrimination against Muslims seeking house on rent in Delhi: Helsinki Institute study
    Friday, May 20, 2016
    [IMG]
    By Rajiv Shah
A recent study by a top Helsinki-based institute has found “strong evidence of discrimination against Muslim applicants” seeking to take house on rent in the National Capital Region of Delhi. The study is based, to quote, “A web-based audit of the market for rental properties offered directly by owners/landlords using a sample of 170 rental properties in the Delhi region.”
Pointing towards the discrimination of Muslims, the study says, “Where the probability that a landlord contacts an upper-caste applicant is 0.35, this is only 0.22 for a Muslim applicant.”

I haven't reviewed this in detail, but disproportionate rejections based on religion or caste isn't too surprising, as Hindu culture puts a high emphasis on dietary "purity" and many Hindus do not want to rent their apartments to people who consume meat (which is highly correlated to both religion and caste). This is a deeply cultural thing that is difficult to weed out.

I don't know how widespread outright rejections are throughout India. Looks like they were focusing on Delhi and observing that discrimination also exists in other big cities like Mumbai which again is not surprising. And I think this study is looking at private housing, not public housing. That's hard to prosecute.

Not sure how you can post one incident and the repercussions as a signal for watering down the smoke. If it happened the other way around the death threats would not be threats. When the smoke is coming from high places there is fire down low.

Yes, agreed neighboring countries have the same issues and likely worse. Problem is one country is rising to become a world power while also transforming into a more extremist hindu nation by the day.

Not sure where this stems from, cultural, historical, ideological, but for whatever reason India happens to be one of the worst places on the planet for women.

Religious nationalism is dangerous, but these threats appear to be confined to local disputes within India. When was the last time you heard about a Hindu outside of India killing people in the name of their religion?

    OK.

Yes, particularly with regards to sexual violence.

Right, but there are not a lot of Catholic extremists going around killing people in the streets of the USA or Europe.

600 years ago we would be having a very different conversation.
