A much more sustainable alternative to mass ownership of electric vehicles is to get people out of cars altogether—that entails making serious investments to create more reliable public transit networks, building out cycling infrastructure so people can safely ride a bike, and revitalizing the rail network after decades of underinvestment. But Musk has continually tried to stand in the way of such alternatives.

He has a history of floating false solutions to the drawbacks of our over-reliance on cars that stifle efforts to give people other options. The Boring Company was supposed to solve traffic, not be the Las Vegas amusement ride it is now. As I’ve written in my book, Musk admitted to his biographer Ashlee Vance that Hyperloop was all about trying to get legislators to cancel plans for high-speed rail in California—even though he had no plans to build it.

Several years ago, Musk said that public transit was “a pain in the ass” where you were surrounded by strangers, including possible serial killers, to justify his opposition. But the futures sold to us by Musk and many others in Silicon Valley didn’t just suit their personal preferences. They were designed to meet business needs, and were the cause of just as many problems as they claimed to solve—if not more.

Why do you want to get on something with a lot of other people, that doesn’t leave where you want it to leave, doesn’t start where you want it to start, doesn’t end where you want it to end? And it doesn’t go all the time.”

“It’s a pain in the ass,” he continued. “That’s why everyone doesn’t like it. And there’s like a bunch of random strangers, one of who might be a serial killer, OK, great. And so that’s why people like individualized transport, that goes where you want, when you want.”

When the audience member responded that public transportation seemed to work in Japan, Musk shot back, “What, where they cram people in the subway? That doesn’t sound great.” The CEO reiterated his preference for individual transportation, ie, private cars. Preferably, a private Tesla. (Tesla offered those attending Musk's talk the chance to test drive a Model S.)

Why get out of our cars at all at this point? Just live in it so you don't have to interact with strangers.

Used Tesla's are beng flipped because of supply shortages...but so are many other non-tesla cars.

That's prob what he means, even though Tesla and others are trying to discourage this by voiding new car purchases by known resellerss.

This is a mess. Banks lending sub prime car credit are gonna hold the bag when used cars start depreciating normally again.

“The cars currently being produced, with the hardware currently being produced, are capable of full self-driving.”

Having recently ridden in a "FSD" model Y, no.... no TF they are not. This one didn't understand what a bike lane was. It kept seeing a safety sticker on a car in front of us as a stop sign.... it's so far from ready it isn't funny and they should be issuing refunds. I don't think visual only guidance will get there in a 15 year time frame.

Highway/interstate cruise with no construction zones.... that is where they are capable of. I can't even imagine trying it in a parking lot.... or Italy. I understand he's talking about the sensors and processing but lol no. Using the same logic, Terri Schiavo could run a 100 meter dash.

You just suggested people should travel around on bikes... You're in no position to mock.

Only if its transitory. You can't (easily) cash out on a car loan and the loans are also much shorter.

Biden needs to do a Cash for Clunkers 2.0 to help move the EV market. Any vehicle getting less than 30MPG is eligible. Makes as much sense as raising rates in this economy.

The original cash for clunkers sucked up inventory and raised the used car market prices. We already have an inventory shortage of cars, another crush program would hurt it even more. Direct attack on the low income.

That was my low key sarcastic suggestion. Raising rates is no different.

The article was from 2019 which was before the supply chain issues. Elon meant exactly what he said. Tesla was attempting to create a ride sharing service and Elon was saying that the Tesla's with automated driving could be used in that service which would generate revenues for the car owners. All complete fantasy land bs lol.

Sorry I live in a world where a huge spending bill is meant to curb inflation. Sarcasm is hard to spot.

Landing boosters on a platform in the middle of the ocean was considered fantasy land too. Individuals using their personal vehicle for passive uber services is fantasy land. People are not going to turn their 75k vehicle into disgusting public transportation.

I am confused. Are you agreeing with what @robbie380 said or no?
