Sometimes the Rockets make moves just to remind us they are still out there. This is that type of move. The Rockets add another older player with zero upside when they have a younger player (Garuba) that needs minutes. Boban, WCS and Chriss really are dead weight and should be dropped. The Rockets are going to be bad this season. Let the younger players play.
This feels like another Daniel Theis situation, where it won't move the needle anywhere but below .500. Silas is the kind of coach who will trust his proven non-factor veterans over his unreliable star potential players. I predict Silas is going to play Stein over Alperen to the detriment of the team, and to Sengun's growth as a player. Fingers crossed it won't happen.
Here is the cold hard truth nobody on this board wants to admit…..Garuba sucks BIG TIME on offense. Never has been good, never will be. He does have NBA level defense, but other than layups and dunks, has ZERO offensive game. The Rockets had hoped he would work day and night to create one, but instead he came into summer camp overweight. Time for the team to get rid of some of that extra weight and keep guys like Bruno who does have a game on both sides of the ball.
Honestly, this sounds like a no-confidence vote with Garuba. Why get another back up big when you already have Fernando, Chriss, and Boban? Normally you only need one third string center at the end of the bench in case injuries or foul troubles happen. Now you have FOUR. So unless they want these guys to compete for the second string spot with Garuba, they need to get rid of at least two of those guys. Another possibility is that they think Garuba's future is at the 4 instead of 5 position. So far, I don't like Garuba's development, not because of his lack of play time but because of how he has handled adversities. He doesn't look like he has the right attitude to succeed in the NBA.
I'm not a Garuba fan at all, but I'd love to see him get 20 minutes a game if it helps our final year of passive tanking.
There's really no reason to put anybody on the floor that we're not developing for our future plans... maybe EGO so we dont tank his value... but nobody else...
I think whether he stays or goes will depend on whether Silas thinks we are further along ...and may want a true backup C guarding the rim, but if he is still all about development - probably sticks with Bruno behind Senguin and Garuba behind him. DD
