I think it is a pretty simple argument? WCS was drafted too high, but has averaged 12 and 8 before, played 100s of games, and is a passable defender. Also "full size" for an NBA centre and athletic Bruno is a guy who had a couple of decent games last year. Maybe he will kick on? No evidence. Also 6'9 - but with really good bounce. So far, at 23, yet to prove he is as good as WCS Garuba is undersized for a C. Not especially bouncy. Looks out of shape. Young, may improve, but a complete swing and hope chance right now. The fact he is on a terrible team, that has minutes at his spot available, but is signing scrubbish bigs like WCS and Fernando - pretty bad sign... shows there isn't a lot of confidence in him.... While WCS may be proven suckage, he is (to date) clearly superior to those other 2...
WCS was drafted to Kings that already had Cousins (at the time one of the top centers in the league ) on it. He at times pushed Cousins for the starting role. In college WCS was a defenseman / lob threat —> rim-runner. If drafted by just about any other team he would have a better career. 12 / 8 are solid numbers for a back up. His biggest issue is he now like to shoot the long ball.
This is a GREAT signing. We needed a rim protector & size at center. Sengun can't play against bigger more physical bigmen. We now have a counter
so many ridiculous homers…I’m just waiting for the WCS “elite PnR” and “elite defense/36 minutes” stats to pop up
Probably just trying to get another big in for training camp - hard to see how he makes this team given whatever he has to offer, there are other players who offer more.
Cauley - Stein signing is harmless. Take a look and if nothing is there then you move on. They do need he big with WCS’s physical profile but They need one with more talent.
That 12/8 year is a complete outlier for his career. It was the last year of his rookie deal, so it appears he really put forth the effort to try to get paid. GMs we’re not buying it and he has never come close since. We have younger guys on the roster who may turn out to be just as bad. Might as well play them while we aren’t trying to win games. They may actually catch on. I don’t hate the signing. It’s not like it really costs us anything. He is an actual center that can step in if one of the others goes in a trade. But, I think Boban is actually a better player. And I am no fan of Boban on the court. I think this is probably just preparation for a possible trade.
Interesting comp: https://stathead.com/basketball/pcm...aulewi01&player_id1=mcgeeja01&sum=0&request=1 Starting 5 Porter-Green-Tate-Smith-Sengun Washington-Christopher-Eason-Martin-CauleyStein Nix-Mathews-Nwaba-Garuba-Fernando They've got to find a home for Gordon. I wonder how this stacks for guys like Garuba and Martin too. Martin+Gordon for Draymond Green works in the trade machine. Pay Donkey max dollars to go traitor, come teach our young guys how to play championship ball.
This is the worst part of the offseason where we spend 10 pages discussing signing a scrub player to a no strings attached camp deal and in 3 months everyone will have forgot he was on the roster at all.
Special shout out to the guys digging up his draft potential reports and acting like he hasn’t been a complete scrub for at least the last 4 years. Let’s not look for a silver lining in a player who hasn’t proved much in an 8 year career - most of which has been people kicking the tires on his “potential” and unsuccessfully unlocking it.
It's even possible that he'll "grade out defensively" into elite Garuba-Sengun levels - who were low key Bill Russell and Wes Unseld last year - we just didn't know it until some magic Twitter graders revealed the secrets.
he's the perfect fpil for winning. a terrible offensive player to have out there in crunch time so opponents can play up on all our shooters and funnel the ball into him for bad free throw shooting, poor finishing moves, and turnovers. I think he sticks and we trade or drop boban.... who would actually contribute to wins with his rim protection and great offensive skill set.
After years of watching a roster of endless 6’8” players it will be a breath of fresh air to see us have the ability to roll out a small, medium, large, and extra large at center……and yes, go seniors size when the situation calls for it.
