    Kaine, Murkowski, Sinema, & Collins Introduce Legislation to Codify Roe v. Wade | 2022-08-01 (senate.gov)

    AUGUST 01 2022
    Kaine, Murkowski, Sinema, & Collins Introduce Legislation to Codify Roe v. Wade

    The Reproductive Freedom For All Act protects the ability of women to make health care choices for themselves. It would:

    • Prohibit state regulations that impose an undue burden on a woman’s access to pre-viability abortions, while allowing states to enact reasonable restrictions on post-viability abortions – provided that states cannot ban abortions that are necessary to protect the life or health of the mother;
    • Protect access to contraceptives; and
    • Preserve conscience protections.

    No way this bill has 60 votes, and these Senators know it. Otherwise they wouldn't be proposing it. Maybe Murkowski and Kaine are more trustworthy on a bill like this this but I don't believe Sinema and Collins for two seconds, and believe they only want to save face.

    Sinema simultaneously blocking the Manchin bill while saying "look over here I'm not a total sell out" would be total Sinema.

    I don't think you get 60 votes in the Senate without this being attached to a Conservative pet project. I think you'd have to permanently outlaw abortion with maybe some exceptions for the life of the mother after the 1st trimester. You MIGHT have 10 Republican Senators then if you allow 12 weeks to get an abortion and give exceptions for health of the mother, etc. And by doing that, there's almost no way the House progressives would sign off on that when the bill goes over to the House.

    So this bill is DOA, and Sinema and Collins know it.

    Sounds like a reasonable framework to me, but "protect the health of the mother" is pretty vague.

    It's very hard (probably impossible) to legislate all possible scenarios of what is health. Best to trust Doctors and leave that up to Doctors.

    I agree, there is no way they can get 60 votes. That doesn't mean you shouldn't propose it, or that proposing it is insincere.

    I think Kaine, and Murkowski are sincere and good for them. However Collins and Sinema are two people who have un-earned any right to assume sincerity. I'll remain skeptical of those two moving forward for pretty freaking good reasons.
