You let Maldy catch for JV (because JV wants it that way first and foremost). Vasquez catches almost all the other games. Or alternatively you play Alvarez in left field and Vasquez as DH if we are hell bent on having Maldy stay as primary catcher.
We sold high on Enmanuel Valdez. His production this year was eye-popping but an outlier compared to prior years.
I like this Vazquez trade quite a bit. Castro is likely done as an Astro...and possibly as a MLB player altogether. I think Korey Lee has looked promising and has a solid future, but he's just not truly ready to get frequent playing time in the bigs this season. Maybe next season for him. I know the players love Maldonado to death and that counts for something (he has played better lately at the plate...but I'm skeptical how long that will last). Still, I'd like Vazquez and Maldy to get a roughly equal # of starts.
I like this move a lot. Solid dude, major improvement. Castro can be gone for good, which is best for everyone, and we have a solid hitting catcher for a change with playoff experience. He should fit in perfectly.
In his defense, Boston is the only team he’s ever known. He got blindsided. I’m not too worried about that.
Backup catcher is different than backup any other position, to me. Your backup catcher should be playing a lot, and since he is replacing Castro/Lee, by definition, he is replacing the backup catcher. With that said, I did say in one of these threads from today that I hope playing time is equal. I want them to both have playing time while getting plenty of rest. At this point, it's about trying to stay as healthy as possible.
I wish Wilyer and Enmanuel much luck against the Yankees in the years to come. Seems like a decent enough deal. The Astros cashed in some of their upper level depth for more certainty and an offensive upgrade at catcher. Click seems to be doing fine so far. Does he have a big move in him this deadline?
Red Sox got JD Martinez from us, this is only fair.... Not really... If only we could let Maldonado catch and Vazquez pinch hit for him every time...
