Christian Vazquez to the Astros

Adding a quality backup catcher was a great move. Adding one that also hates the Yankees, even better move.

 

He's only 31 yrs old.

Not sure why we can't sign him long term after this season.

His last contract was for only $5 million a year.

That's cheap for a solid hitting catcher.

 

Both Vazquez and Mancini seem like candidates to be resigned if things go well.

 

Do we know what was given up yet?

 

There's another one that's more active. Still trying to see what we gave up, and if Bell is still an option.

The value of this deal seems heavily contingent on Dusty actually playing this guy over Maldy which is hard to imagine.

 

I’d assume Korey Lee may have been involved. Though I’d hope not…

 

My brother and I were texting and I mentioned the same thing. Hopefully the Astros give both catchers around 50% of the time, keep them both rested and gives Vazquez time to get acclimated to the staff.

 

Vasquez batting . 282 this season.

Wow how refreshing would that be in the lineup at catcher?

Does he start over Maldy? Honest question.

 

He should, but I have a feeling it will be Maldy 60/40 in a 5 game game stretch

 

I figure 50/50 playing time. With Maldy coming in to secure games with leads late innings, or Vazquez replacing Maldy if the Astros are needing extra offense if they are losing or tied. Dusty gonna be happy with this added flexibility.

 

Berman says 2 minor leaguers, no idea beyond that.

 

What's the return? I wonder if Pham going from Reds to Red Sox is part of this deal too?
