“…if the NFL does appeal and the discipline increases, I would fully expect the NFLPA at that point would take this to Federal Court and create as much chaos as they can into the regular season.”
It does look a little suspect that the accused let out a statement the day before judgement claiming they would be ok with whatever the judgement was.
Technically they could appeal. Goodell still has final say over punishment. The judge found that Watson was in violation, that’s all Goodell needs
I agree with this. The NFL is going to have to push for a year and get close to it to save any kind of face. These tweet clips of the Judge's decision and statements look awful for a league that is already struggling with a domestic/sexual violence problem. Goodell needs to go to the mat on this one, and possibly even risk losing in court and burning millions of dollars up in the process. They can't take a passive stance here.
It looks bad for the judge too. She’s basically saying sexual assault is ok as long as you’re nice. What a crock of ****
Yeah, but the complicating issue is the optics of overturning the first case that went to the jointly appointed arbitrator. Not sure Goodell wants to set that precedent.
Right thing to do is for the NFL to appeal it but of course they don't have the balls or "want to." They would much rather it fade into the background and be done with it. At least they showed Calvin Ridley they don't stand for betting on games
It's total news to me that the NFL gave up control over its player punishment rights. That seems like a gigantic win for the NFLPA and extremely out of character for the NFL. Did this happen during the last CBA negotiations?
I laughed pretty good at that one. The arbitrator decides if there was a violation of the code of conduct, suggests punishment. Goodell is still solely in charge of the punishment if they’re found in violation. Now, as others have said, does he want to go against the suggestion or not.
Anybody remember the punishment handed out to Roberto osuna, aroldis champman, kobe, and Roethlisberger?
