    Russell seemed like a great guy in addition to being one of the ten greatest players ever.

    Bill Russell was one of those players you thought would live forever, as crazy as that sounds.

    He played before my time, but as a kid I remember him as an announcer on the NBA on CBS television. There were occasionally Sunday games live but weekday games were tape delay after the late local news. Honestly my favorite basketball announcer ever. He got 11 rings playing only 13 years. RIP

    Something else to mention, he was a champion/activist for the black community when it wasn't necessarily considered brave to do so. Not sure there are as many people still around from his time that meant as much on and off the court. Again RIP.

    These type of men only come through once in a Generation. I only got to see him play through film but knowing how hard the game of basketball is and the fact that he was able to rise above all and succeed at such a high level deserves high praise.

    I met Bill around 2014 in Portland. My GF and I had gotten a room at the Nines, the hotel where the Rockets stayed while in town. We stepped into an elevator to find Bill and his wife (who was holding a dog) inside. I shook his hand and we spoke briefly until they reached their floor. He was as nice as could be, and it seemed genuine.

    RIP, big guy.

    Bill Russell had the greatest career of any individual in any major sport imo.

    Better than Jordan, Ruth, Brady, Gretzky and Pele.
