    Nash Deal Ends Bryant-Suns Talk

Agent says former Maverick point guard agrees to contract with Phoenix, reducing competition for L.A. star.

    By Tim Brown
    Times Staff Writer

    July 2, 2004

The Phoenix Suns will try to spend their salary-cap space on point guard Steve Nash, not Kobe Bryant.

And the Dallas Mavericks might have lost a valued player in their hopes to find a deal with the Lakers in a trade for Shaquille O'Neal.

Nash and the Suns have agreed to a five-year, $65-million contract, according to agent Bill Duffy. Nash, a free agent who began his career in Phoenix and spent the last six seasons with the Mavericks, cannot enter into a contract until July 14, by NBA guidelines.

Along with the Clippers and San Antonio Spurs, the Suns had room under the cap and several good, young players, believed to be of interest to Bryant. But, whether on word from Bryant or not, the Suns moved quickly away from Bryant and to secure Nash.

According to reports, Sun owner Robert Sarver, Chairman Jerry Colangelo and President Bryan Colangelo met with Nash in Dallas on Thursday, reached a handshake agreement and returned to Phoenix.

The Lakers' major off-season moves had been to send away Phil Jackson and put O'Neal on the market. Now they've lost some of the competition for Bryant, though the Clippers appear to pose the greatest threat.

Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak spent Thursday, the first day of the free-agency period, in North Carolina, where he spoke to Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski about replacing Jackson. He contacted the agents for Bryant and Derek Fisher on Wednesday night and tried to reach Slava Medvedenko's agent and Karl Malone on Thursday.

Clipper management also spoke to Bryant's agent Wednesday night. The Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets are well under the salary cap, but do not appear to interest Bryant, whose preference seems to be Southern California.

Many believe Bryant would rather see O'Neal traded before committing to the Lakers. After a lot of early interest, however, trade talks involving O'Neal have slowed, in part because Kupchak has been reluctant to progress beyond the basic parameters of deals.

Though O'Neal's wife, Shaunie, publicly asked the Mavericks for a trade this week, those close to O'Neal said there were several places O'Neal would choose to play and that he would not limit his destination to Dallas.

The Houston Rockets have made an early and aggressive move to sign free-agent guard Brent Barry and that, too, could affect the Lakers in multiple ways. The Lakers have an interest in Barry. Also, the Rockets have considered signing Fisher as a replacement for Steve Francis, who went to the Orlando Magic in the Tracy McGrady trade. The Lakers would like to keep Fisher.

Fisher's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said there had been "a lot of early interest," and that Fisher remained emotionally attached to the Lakers.

"He's got enough good feelings about the Lakers," Bartelstein said. "Mitch and I are going to talk more."

I'm surprised this news isn't generating more buzz. I think Clutch fans must be worn out from the TM trade.

I assume CD is offering like The Whole MLE to this guy!. Previously people were saying he wanted a 3 year 20 Mill Contract!  . Personaly if his Asking for that he aint worth it. By the time his contract runs out he be 35 and there is no gurantee with his past History with injuries he'll Complete a whole Season.

BB is nice. But I hope we don't have to overpay him. The rumored 3 year 20mil price is too high.

But I think this warrants its own thread.

I like Barry alot but I hope we're not the team talking about signing him for 20m over the next three years. Nevertheless, would be solid pickup for a team starved for guys who can distribute the ball.

In his last 5 seasons he has played 88% of the games. Not that bad.

I saw a thread on Clevalnd BBS that Rockets is rumored to have offer 5 year 60M to Boozer. Is that possible? Or just shear fabrication?

Barry's defense is a liability, but his shooting is pretty amazing. I'd rather have him provide a spark off the bench than start at PG. His asking price is definitely too high IMHO. Three years for 20 million? man...

I don't see how he can be a worse defender than Steve, but I guess its possible. I haven't watched him much, but when I have I'm impressed by his knowledge of the game. His athelticism certainly surprises you as well.

As some have mentioned, when running the point, sometimes you do feel like he is a threat to lose the ball quite often, but his turnover numbers the last two years haven't been horrible.

Also, I think there is a difference between being a bad defender and playing no defense. He definitely tries, but some are naturally not as talented at defending, and Brent has NEVER had the benefit of strong interior defense behind him.

I don't know if it's possible, but it is likely fabrication anyway. Please provide the link to that BBS.

We don't have 10mil cap space to do that.

I wonder what we're offering him? Unless we still have the full trade exception, the most we can offer him is the MLE. Didn't we use much of the TE in the T-Mac trade?

I'm a little wary of overpaying for Barry. The numbers being thrown around are ridiculous. Unfortunately, he's not going to take less than the full MLE. I could see three years for the MLE, but I wouldn't be happy doing it. And I'd be particular about who our backup PG is and expect him to play signiificant minutes a la Moochie. If we were to pick up Barry, I'd want a five-man rotation at the 1-2-3 similar to this:

Barry/"Duhon-type" PG with a decent perimeter shot
    T-Mac/Barry
    JJ/T-Mac/Boki

If you're willing to pay Barry the MLE, you'd better want him for at least 30 mpg, and I wouldn't want him as the primary ball-handler for more than 2/3 of that time.

    Just found this:

Cavaliers Make Move to Sign Boozer for Years to Come

Statement from Jim Paxson regarding Carlos Boozer:
"Yesterday the Cavaliers elected not to exercise our team option for Carlos Boozer's third season. As a result, we now are able, and fully intend, to enter into a long-term contract with Carlos once the Moratorium Period ends. The Moratorium Period starts July 1st and runs through July 13th.

The Moratorium Period, which is part of the collectively- bargained agreement between the NBA and the Players Association, constitutes a period during which teams and free agents can negotiate the terms and conditions of new contracts, but are prohibited from entering into any agreement concerning such contracts.

Per league rules regarding the Moratorium Period, the Cavaliers can have no additional comment regarding Carlos' contract status with the Cavaliers until after July 13th.

Carlos Boozer is a valuable, core part of the foundation of this team moving forward and our desire is for him to be a Cavalier for the long term."

    Boozer is not a FA.

At least, I don't think he is.

He is a restricted FA, and Clevland can only offer him the MLE....Boozer says the right things, but if someone offers his 7+ mill, he may change his mind.
