I'm sure the Rockets are angling for a Tate-like extension. Talen Horton-Tucker has similar career numbers to KPJ and has put them up on a team with championship aspirations. They saw the potential in him and gave him a 3-year $30M extension and were immediately disappointed in his lack of progress. He is now an immoveable albatross on their roster. If KPJ can get that kind of contract from the Rockets, he should jump at the chance. I just don't see some non-lottery pick getting an $18-20M extension off their rookie deal, especially with the marginally decent numbers KPJ has put up on a losing team. Any team that signs him to a near $20M/year deal is going to expect contributions toward a playoff push. There is just no indication that he can produce in that environment. I think they could look to THT as a cautionary tale. Couple that with KPJ's past issues, and I just don't see these big offers coming his way without a significant jump in production (both raw numbers and efficiency) and a squeaky clean year. He has the potential to do it, but one misstep and he might find himself out of the league. That Tate contract would be looking pretty good then.
He would be great with us, but not with Sengun.. I’d rather have not have 35 million choose not to play bc his feelings are hurt. Sengun it is!
Besides mental instability, is a 15/6 guy in his 3rd year in one of the worst teams really worth a max?! Beyond the stats, he has not even proved to be a floor leader to be in the max discussion. He has had a few good games but lacks consistency. This upcoming season he has a lot to prove.
most people overvalue KPJ as they did with wood. in the end wood was worth a late first, and Dallas immediately said he's coming off the bench there. if KPJ went to another team it would be in a 6th man role. I'm not sure there's another team where he would start. I would be comfortable signing him to MLE type money, with some NG'd money to protect the team if they need to move on.
Porter Jr left at halftime: incident in question happened Jan 1st. Back-to-Back games as the Rockets played Miami the day before. I'm cool with a two 20-30 and a team option for the third. Anything else is insane. Let him walk. He's not going to get paid that elsewhere
If he’s not going to get that anywhere else, then why would we give it to him? He has a unique opportunity here. The Rockets are negotiating from a position of strength, not weakness.
That’s not likely. How often do non max RFA’s really get big offer sheets? Even ayton barely had suitors and obviously kpj isn’t close to him
