O, you were talking about odorizzi… oops. I liked the trade when we got him. But now that I watch him every start, I don’t want him.
I would mostly agree with this assessment except for him hitting his numbers. I listed his baseballtradevaues.com value to make a point that was a bit extreme. I do think he his a perfectly good #5 starter and he does have some value, but not nearly Trey Mancini value. He has likely 10 starts left and possibly as many as 12 to hit his GS and IP incentives. He has 11 gs. Outside of injury there is 0% chance he takes the option so I will only look at the buyout. It's currently $3.25M Goes to $4.25M with 20 gs $5.25 with 25. With 9 more starts he gets an extra $1M He won't make 14 more. That gets him to $5.92M, $6.42M, or $7.42M for the rest of this year and buyout. Depending if he hits 100ip then 110ip. Just for giggles it's $8.17 - $11.67M this and next if he does take it. Depending on GS and IP the rest of the season. 100, 110, 120. Ip increase this year salary 20, 25, 30 GS increase next year salary and buyout
According to McTaggart (I believe) posted in the Mariners game thread, he is a probable for this weekend.
If Urquidy is out - better be something worthwhile returning. (Sorry if I missed it) Not sure I like it at all.
Urquidy with 8 straight quality starts could not have come at a more ideal time. His trade value is at an apex.
This team could really be improved by adding 1-4 players. That said, it should probably over take the Yankmees for the best record in the AL as it's constructed now ( +McCullers) since they have the 2nd easiest schedule by record the rest of the way. That has unique challenges. Since the team is "good enough" only major impact acquisitions will improve the team and that means giving up impact players ( established or prospect) to get them. There is nothing wrong with Odorizzi but he's not going to get an impact player in return. Since the team is not looking for prospects then I expect him to be kept. There is significant value in letting him pitch every 5 or 6 days and saving the other arms for the postcseason, ESPECIALLY if Urquidy and/or Garcia are traded If that move is made, I expect it to be for a 1B/OF/DH that plays 75% of the time in place of Yuli, McCormick, or Meyers or a TOR starting pitcher who will be one of the top 4 SP in the playoffs. The team has several mid level, high floor, mid level ceiling OF prospects that could be moved too. Jose Siri, Lewis Brinson, Corey Julks, Wilyer Abreu, Justin Dirden, Ross Adolph, Jordan Brewer, Matthew Barefoot. Zach Saniels, Kenedy Corona, Logan Cerny, They all have warts but each also has positives that could appeal to an organization as a small part of a bigger deal. Colin Barber and/or Pedro Leon would be bigger pieces. I could see Meyers and/or McCormick but think it's unlikely.
I did a deep dive on the entire league on another site and I think I had 12 teams he would make some level of sense for. Take your 7 and I added Milwaukee, Tampa, White Sox (they aren’t far back at all) and Philly. As some interest as a no cost addition.
Making the case to trade for Ohtani and pay him $50 million a year. He obviously solves the corner OF position. You trade away Tucker in the deal plus whatever else it takes. Let's say Tucker would cost $20 million a year to sign him (plus defensive OF, clutch hitter with some power), here's how you have to look at it: Split the pay for Ohtani down the middle: 25M OF 25M SP So you avoid paying a Tucker $20 and get a pretty substantial upgrade in Ohtani instead at $25 million. Overall the better valued contract is Ohtani. You get a #1 starter for $25 million (Cole making nearly $40 million in comparison). So even this half of the deal is really good value. This can replace the cost of what it would have taken to keep JV. I think you make the move. Now. JV at 40 for $30 million a year Tucker $20 million a year Vs Ohtani at $50 million a year You tell me what you prefer.
Two things: 1- an injury to 1 guy then creates 2 massive holes in your roster which isn’t great 2- I don’t know physically how long he can keep this up. And if you are going to pay him 50 he has to be valuable both ways. If it’s 50 for 5 years- cool- no problem. If it’s 50 for 7 or 8 years. Well… probably suggest we pass.
