Cruz was coaching and wearing the uniform much of that time. And still beloved.

btw, my favorite Biggio Stat is his Modern Record for HBP 285. He was within 2 of combining the ALL TIME and Modern records for HBP at 287 and holding it alone with 3.

It still happens today, although it's gotten a lot better.

The gold gloves are legit the most poorly chosen awards in professional sports. I could almost forgive them back in the day because they had no access to real defensive numbers, but when s**t like Palmeiro winning despite DH'ing 130 games happens, you know they just completely mailed it in when selecting and did not even the slightest due diligence.

My take even then was Jeter got those because he made routine plays look spectacular if he didn't wave them through while Adam made impossible plays look routine. That and the few metrics of the era were AWFUL.

ps Jeter had 1.1 dwar in 2009, though it was his peak. That was when the NYC press controlled awards. I hate NYC. Upstate is passable. I'm still mad about those GGs. But hey, I'm still mad at Lincoln and Sherman.

I'm also mad about the Pledge which violates the Constitutional Role of the DAMNED FEDS.

OK I'm through. Back to baseball.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and remember when Andy Van Slyke was in center field. He was an excellent defensive center fielder. They asked him about his chances of getting the gold glove and response was I hope I hit enough to be considered for the award. This was those Pirate teams with Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Doug Drebek, ect.

    Agreed.

The gold gloves really should go to guys who make the correct play the most often, not the players who make the most athletic play. The numbers bear that out. Unfortunately it's the posterization of defense.

Positioning and reading the bat off the ball skills are way more valuable than silly jump throws or even OF'er layout catches. Heck even Correa's cannon of an arm papers over the fact that he has mostly had negative range scores. (granted he somehow had a very positive range score during his platinum glove season).

    Jeter GGs
    2004 -0.3 dWAR
    2005 -1.8 dWAR
    2006 -0.7 dWAR
    2009 1.1 dWAR
    2010 0.0 dWAR

This cries out Silver Slugger, not Gold Glove.

NYC says it should go to the player who makes the routine play look HARD.

The Everett, Ausmus, Pitcher spot was a great time for a bathroom break.

Everett was a great fielder, but even that wasn't enough to make up for how bad he was with the bat.

Is it above average? Pena leads the league in errors and he hasn't even played every game. I would say most of those errors are throwing errors.

I'm not talking arm strength, I'm talking about effectiveness. That being said, he gets to a lot of plays that most SS wouldn't be involved in. I'm still a big fan.

When asked if a player should take part in the HR Derby...the answer is NO!

An error and giving up a hit because you couldn't make it to the ball have the same result. He still converts the really tough plays at such a rate that he's rocking 9 OAA and 8 DRS though the halfway point. That ranks 3rd and 4th in the majors amongst SS, respectively. He's doing it with far fewer innings than the #2 and #1 guy in OAA on top of that.

He really needs to clean up the errors, but that should come with experience.

I was just going off his prospect report indicating a 60 Arm. Nothing else is figured in. Most throws are just a little more demanding at this level. It's a real short trip between getting comfortable and getting complacent. He is a rookie who hasn't played a full season in three years. He's in new territory.

As a rookie, the HR derby could be more important to him. He made more money that night than he will all season. Plus it put him in the national spotlight.

You're correct, it was worth it for Julio.

Like I said, in my original post. He's a heck of a defender. Just a big drop from CC to Pena in regards to arm. CC had such a great arm and it was seldom off target. Pena is elite in regards to coverage.

It’s cause they’re mariners fans. They don’t get a lot of sun… they just get excited. They really love the Astros like they love their daddy.

Of our guys with double digit AB's vs Gilbert, we fare pretty well except poor Yuli.

    Altuve (7-13)
    Yordan (4-13)
    Bregs (6-11)
    Yuli (2-13)

On the opposite ledger, Crawford & France are combined (12-29) vs J.V.
The rest of their squad hasn't done too well.
