Prayers up for my sister. She started havung bad blood clots in her leg. No know reason. No history of it. No covid This has caused her foot to not have great circulation. They tried the bypass twice and it seems to have failed. Now they are saying the options are : 1. A life of pain management with a near useless foot 2. Amputation I am desperately looking for another option No matter the long shot She is distraught and terrified. To make it worse She is un California and u am here. Trying to find a doc for a second opinion. Or something. She had visited doctors earlier and they said it was a nerve issue. I am infuriated. I feel like if it had been caught earlier we would not be here. At this point I guess I am just venting. Thanks for listening. Rocket River
Thoughts and positive vibes to your sister. I know this might be a weird suggestion...has anyone suggested using leeches to help? I think they have anticoagulant properties and have been used to help with blood circulation.
Very sorry to hear that. If its any consolation, my second cousin lost a significant chunk of her leg in a car accident. She has a fake foot but you'd never know it. Obviously, its not ideal but your sister can still have a full life even if amputation happens
Are these clots arterial or venous? Is she on blood thinners? She likely has diabetes but how well controlled are her medical conditions and sugars bypass grafts in the leg due tend to crap out, how bad is it does she have sensation, motor function in the leg? find her a good pcp (also workup for etiolog certain things can predispose you) and then get another vascular surgeon to take a look. Nothing wrong a second opinion best of luck to your sister
Damn, RR. Sorry I can't help other than wishing you and your sister good luck and suggesting getting multiple opinions from multiple doctors.
I went through a couple of years not being able to move my legs without horribly screaming in pain. I couldn't even slightly adjust myself while lying down without screaming. The pain level was constant at 10 with spikes off the charts during the days and nights. During this time I got blood clots in my legs—multiple clots in my left leg. I remember one day like somebody flipped a switch on/off and my left foot started buzzing. It felt like I had a roll of dimes moving up and down the bottom of my foot. It was an odd feeling. I too had no real history leading up to this. I remember being able to still skate the year prior and then the pain slowly started like I was sore. It then quickly grew to unimaginable pain over the course of 6 months to a year. In and out of the hospital they eventually diagnosed it as psoriatic arthritis and thought maybe I had a blood disorder, (Factor V?) A filter for the blood clots was an option but we stuck with the thinners for a year. My two doctors found the right medicine combination that worked with me and had little to no side effects. The clotting has gone away and has not been back thankfully. The Neuropathy in my foot fluctuates but never to the level, it was. The pain for the most part compared to what it was is somewhat gone. I can at least get around now but I do need to use at least one cane most of the time. Pain management was an option and still is but I don't want to be on pain medication all the time. I had enough of that going through the first part of the journey through hell. I'm not really sure if I said anything you want or do not want to hear but your post about your sister reminded me of what I went through and still deal with. I don't wish that physical/mental pain on anyone and hope she and you hold strong through this. No matter how it goes she will need someone to listen and try to understand her because it might be difficult to explain sometimes
I thought about this. That they could at least suck out the clots and bad blood Didn't know how to articulate it without sounds like a quack or some "voodoo science" thing This is the worse case senario I think She would have a prosthetic and move on with her life. She is scare of that though. She is just so scared. I honestly don't know I know she has no history of clots. no Family History. I am diabetic but she is not. She says she can wiggle her toes a bit There is alot of pain - I think it is the lack of oxygen getting through to the foot or not enough She has not been diagnoses as diabetic It does. I means there is hope Thanks every one for the kind words and advice. Rocket River
I feel for your sister. Have her doctors check for Factor V Leiden, an inherited genetic pre-disposition for clotting. If she is taking hormone-based birth control pills, have her doctor evaluate and stop them immediately. Move to non-hormone based BCP. We have dealt with Factor V Leiden clotting issues with spouse for years; including amputation, clots in heart & lungs, and multiple arterial/venous clots in legs. We're down to 2 daily injections of Lovenox for clot control. All other treatments have failed.
Thanks for this. I passed it along to my sister. Also I was told that once upon a time they did artificial valves in the left but may not be something they still do Rocket River
Will be praying for your sister man, keep us updated. Psalm 9:9 “The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Update: Alas my sister had the surgery and has moved to a Rehab facility. She is recovering well. They have to do a cleanup Surgery tomorrow. She goes up and down. Depression and Loss are a part of it. She being a trooper She is not in so much pain (Still some pain of course) Still a bit concerned about how we got here and looking to make sure everything was kosher. Thank You everyone for the Prayers and Good Thoughts Rocket River
