Yup, downhill into the worst team in the league for two years straight as soon as your daddy bought the team. Thanks Tilman!

Because buying a team with CP3 and Harden is buying a team that’s “rebuilding” LMAO

Man… the hate for Tilman is crazy here. It seems so personal to some of you, like he had a one night stand with your mom.

    Tilman stans r disgusting.

We went from a playoff team to a rebuilding one shortly right after. Folks like to blame solely harden for that, but likes to convinently ignore that the owner has the final say on the direction of the team. Any dumba$$ could see that tilman wanted to tank from the getgo to ease his wallet, Wall and cousins r not reinforcement for any competing team.

Man talks all that sht about doing whatever it takes to win a ring, then we end up tanking. Good thing the rebuild is going swell bc our big ego owner finally learns to gtfo of the way of the process.

The real test will come when it's time for pay day.

They were fighting already cuz Harden didnt want to share the ball in case you didnt know.

The only thing Tilman did to "ruin" the team is not pay Ariza his 15M in free agency. Which turned out to be right fyi since he been a scrub since then.

Nah you are the one disgusting here.

You dont know whst the hell you are talking about. Any owner would like a contender over a tanking team DUH. Contenders make $$$ in ticket sales and playoff revenue. Thats why Tilman bought the team. Owners hate tanking teams cuz nobody buy tickets, they dont save money they lose money with tanking teams thats why Les Alexander refused to tank even 1 season.

Y'all are such a joke. You just want a scapegoat so invent all sorts of reasons that dont even make any sense. Yeah ok Tilman biught the team so he could tank and save money. Thats his master plan. Hey hasnt it ever occurred to you he'd save the most money if he didnt buy the team in the first place?

U do know teams still generate profit even if they are sht right? How else would the Texans still b a able to roll in a sht ton of dough when they r even shttier than the rockets.

Tilman saved money on a tanking team rather than splurge on a champion caliber team since it's cheaper.

Y else would the man btch about cp3 contract on the media?

Coupled with the covid pandemic, which hits his service business hard he wouldn't want to splurged on the Rockets.

Buying an NBA franchise will always make u richer in the end whether u r sht or not. Look at the Knicks and suns (a few years back). Sht all day long still generating profit.

Tilman probably cares about the Rockets, but it's not his first priority.

Tilman is actually relatively rich compared to Les. His net worth is nearly 3X as much and he has a lot of businesses that will do well going forward, he will make money to spend on the Rockets. I genuinely think things were looking bad during Covid , and even prior to covid for him , it seemed like he was risking a lot to buy the Rockets at the time ( i had posts that went in depth on this as I have close mutual friends in the same industry and did Hospitality PE for a bit myself) it was potentially disastrous for his industry considering how everyone is levered up in Hospitality, but his other sources of income are growing. Les had most of his money tied up in the rockets and real estate that didnt generate income, he mostly made money off of the appreciation of it when sold. The difference I hope means that Tilman will have the cash to spend on the players if he wants to. I think Tilman was frugal out of necessity, my outlook on his businesses has completely changed since 2020, he seems the type to spend if he has it, and I think he will definitely have it going forward. He is not like Warren Buffet just accumulating wealth for whatever reason he has and not spending it, he likes nice things and trophy assets like big yachts and sports teams.

The fact that he was willing to rebuild through the draft with owing John Wall $120M proves he is willing to spend. He sacrificed the box office and committed to the tank. This was his fault we ended up w Wall, but he made the right move, and I believe John Wall's $40M buyout is the biggest in NBA history by a long shot. I believe this might be the biggest buy out in all of sports ever, could not confirm.

They payroll didn't drop. It literally didn't.

    His revenues did...

What happens when your revenue drops but your expenses stay the same?

I'm asking because I'm not sure you know...

Never said that, Tilman inherited a disgruntled quitter and a CP3 that looked like he was possibly out of the league in the next couple of years. Harden left and has not been even close to Houston Harden so why cry about it? Harden did not leave and is on his 3rd chip with owners who are willing to "spend"... The Rockets wouldn't have won anything had Harden stayed and the Rockets future would be non existent. Tilman, Stone and co sold high and will soon get rewarded big time with the Brooklyn picks. CP3 was the player Rockets should have kept but Harden pushed a trade for Westbrook that lost us an all time great. Even then, with CP3 The Rockets were not beating GSW so its once again pointless to cry over spilled milk...

Tilman and co did the best thing they could possibly do, they sold high on Harden and started the rebuild to a brighter future. Tilman could have continued to bring in old stars that kept us in the playoffs these past two years but because he isn't macro sighted like you he focused on the bigger picture. Build The Rockets right and the money will come later...

He seriously ****** our chance at a title. We could still be a contender today.

I am hoping he learned his lesson but only time will tell.

This is incorrect. Very incorrect. The margins are not high on NBA teams historically. About 50% of the league was operating at a net loss, and most of the teams on a enterprise value to EBITDA basis are one of the worst investments you can make, they are trophy assets, you do not buy a sports team to get filthy rich, you buy one after you have become filthy rich. The data is not easily available since these are private enterprises, but occasionally Forbes has a breakdown. A few years ago Forbes had the Lakers as the most profitable team at $150M, I believe at the time they were valued at $3.5B , that is a 23X multiple which is insane for a company that is not technology focused and does not have a similar growth trajectory. That was also by far the most profitable team as well, so you are looking at 50X-100X multiples when businesses often sell for 10X. You do end up making money owning a team, but it is on the sale of the team because the value of the team increases since there are only 30 teams and its a rare trophy asset, operationally many NBA teams historically have not made money.

I am not sure why you are comparing NFL teams to NBA teams lol, but yeah thats kind of all over the place in your analysis since these are completely different businesses (number of games, prices of tickets, tv deals etc, you cant make this comparison). I can speak to NBA teams however, and the valuations on them. NBA team valuations are fluid for middle market because they are often tied to the number of long term star players under contract. Tilman would not pay $2.2B for a team with max guys in Harden and CP3, just to dump their salaries , this affects the value of the team, a lot goes into valuation including market size and TV deals.

Your Knicks example is also irrelevant, the historical Knicks financials were never broken out for the public, they always included all of Madison Square Garden Group, which included a TV network, and multiple arenas and concert venues. The NBA has increased the financial requirements to own a team, you have to be wealthy to buy a team, because no they do not always make money, so you need money to be able to cover losses. The league learned the hard way when they had to literally assume ownership and control of New Orleans Hornets.

You need to be competitive, tanking is not about saving money, that is stupidly short sighted. He is building this way because those are the cards hes dealt once Harden asked for WB. If you tank you lose a TON of money. If you arent winning games, those seats are empty and you get no playoff revenue. More games means more seats sold.

The ideal situation for an owner is to be competitive and win while staying under the luxury tax. The next ideal situation is being competitive and being over the tax, then the next ideal situation is having a team w minimal expenses and building through the draft, and worst case is you are spending tons of money and not competitive, which just so happens to be what the Knicks and Clippers do.

Tilman was willing to spend when he had a team that had a chance to win it all with CP3 and Harden, once that team was blown up by the Westbrook deal he recognized that he was going to be in that last tier worst case scenario of teams paying luxury and not winning, so he decided to reset.

apparently calling the Point God the worst contract in the league is doing no wrong

100% revisionist history. Tilman did not choose to “sell high” on Harden, he was forced to.

It's wasn't even a sell high, harden didnt even have a no trade clause but was still able to force himself onto the nets. Only reason things r extremely rosy for us is cause the Nets r about to implode all bc kyrie doesn't believe in vaccines.
