Last week Griner's coach on the Phoenix Mercury, Vanessa Nygaard, evoked James' name in making a point about the country's slow response to the center's detainment.

"If it was LeBron, he'd be home, right?" Nygaard told reporters. "It's a statement about the value of women. It's a statement about the value of a Black person. It's a statement about the value of a gay person. All of those things. We know it, and so that's what hurts a little more."

What a bunch of absolute drivel. If Griner wasn't famous, you wouldn't be talking about her and she wouldn't be home. Other Americans have been detained in Russia on trumped up charges but they weren't tall and didn't put an inflated leather sack through a metal ring at an elite level and so you, Vanessa Nygaard, and most other people didn't give a sh** before either. How about the value of non famous athletes?

 

As far as I know she has never been in trouble in the United States, is active with charities and her time and is widely liked by the people that actually know her. Her “offense” is stupid, and anyone that relishes her hardship is being shitty.

Having said that, people like LeBron James do not live in reality. He seems to think that basketball is the center of the universe and that he and other rich athletes deserve preferential treatment. Where was he when China was committing atrocities and he shut up and counted his money.

I hope she gets to come home, and there is no doubt that Russia is using her as a pawn - but I am not sure what people in the USA expect? Just because she gets due process in the USA doesn’t mean squat in Russia.

Maybe. Hard for me to get a read on that given the present circumstances. Do I think there would be more out cry? Sure, that’s true up and down the food chain. Griner is where she is on it. Just like no names are where they are too.
