Musk lived a privileged upbringing. He didn't come from "nothing".

You're discounting just how valuable his upbringing was, it's worth way more than $26K. All the family connections/networking, educational opportunities, and business credibility that came from being the son from a wealthy mining family is invaluable. If Musk was truly down in the dumps, he could have friends, parents, family friends etc to bring him in. He also didn't have to worry about taking care of people close to him, because they were already doing okay. That's a luxury that allows people to be risk takers.

Twitter Is the Biggest Musk Loser
The social-media platform needs a reboot without the Tesla CEO.
    By The Editorial Board
    July 10, 2022 5:50 pm ET

Elon Musk’s decision Friday to call off his purchase of Twitter is a loss for the social-media site as well as for political free speech. The only winners will be progressives who support the site’s censorship of views that don’t conform to theirs on politics, climate and many other subjects.

Critics say Mr. Musk was never serious about buying Twitter, but he sure went a long way to show he was. He now faces a $1 billion breakup fee, as well as extensive litigation with the company. Mr. Musk offered $54.20 a share, but the stock had fallen to $36.81 before Friday’s announcement. It fell to $35.04 in after-hours trading.

Mr. Musk’s takeover financing was heavily leveraged and became more precarious as interest rates rose. He initially offered Tesla shares as collateral, but then sought to replace margin loans by bringing in other investors as Tesla shares fell along with the market. He has accused Twitter of undercounting spam accounts and a lack of transparency.

The site’s user growth is slowing, and it has lost $1.3 billion over the past two years even as tech-company profits have boomed. In February Twitter borrowed $1 billion in private markets. But debt is becoming more expensive, and other mooted suitors with the means to buy Twitter could encounter regulatory obstacles.

Mr. Musk may be hoping to negotiate a lower purchase price, but if he does walk away it will be a loss for political discourse. Tweets by conservatives that present even purely factual information about subjects like Covid treatments and climate are often labelled misinformation. Accounts are suspended without explanation, and appeals go answered. Nobody knows who the wizards are behind the curtains making these decisions, and Mr. Musk says he’d allow more open debate.

A Musk purchase would be a free-market solution to the progressive dominance of tech platforms. Republicans are promising to target tech-company censorship if they win control of Congress in November, and Twitter will be one of the first in line. This could also frighten investors and potential buyers.

Twitter can help itself by ending its one-sided political censorship, but its woke staff and corporate culture might make that impossible. The company might find it needed Mr. Musk more than he needed Twitter.

Womp womp. Those whiny WSJ editors were doing the same scorekeeping while crying about wokesters. Twitter definitely did lose out. Their company has been even more a wreck since Elon bought a stake, but no ****s given by biz minded WSJ for a heavy handed con posing as a takeover. Shameless.

Elon is losing all his friends...from both sides. Maybe joe sixpack can meet Tesla slack or Elon comes to Jesus with a Chick-fil-A alliance, sell those cars like hotcakes. I guess Joe still good for another round of pump n dump. Scrounge up some doge and we goin to da moon.

The more details that emerge, the more baffling this deal turns out to be...

Exactly. Musk as a young adult had what we would consider "high risk tolerance". As in a dialed investment didn't mean he is going to be short on rent for the next few months.

Trump is attacking Elon because he is trying to promote his Truth Social media platform, and Elon's apparent abandonment of Twitter makes this an opportunistic time and manner for him to do so.

Musk supports DeSantis. DeSantis is a real threat to Trumps bid. Like it or not, Musk has massive influence on anyone that isn't a straight ticket Democrat voter.

DeSantis has already said he is not going to run if Trump runs. So this makes no sense. Also, Trump made no mention of DeSantis here.

Musk is right. Aside from anything else, Trump is too old, as I said.

So you agree that Democrats should not pursue investigations into what happened on January 6th, the attempts to overturn the election, and Trump’s role in it? That’s also what he is saying.

I don't know. Part of me thinks Trump should be in jail, but then I think that's unlikely to happen, would only divide an already divided country even further and ultimately these mutual witchhunts just distract from the real issues of the country and the world.
