I've never understood the ongoing love affair between many on this bbs and Eric Snow. If my recent visit with several Sixers faithful was any indication, Philly would love to issue Snow a first class ticket out of town. It's not about his contract ... It's about his lack of game. Snow can pass the ball, but that's it. With as many shots as Iverson puts up, the PG feeding him's gonna get some assists. And turnovers are less likely when you're passing around the perimeter.

The Detroit Pistons proved, en route to being crowned World Champions, that basketball is indeed a 5 on 5 game. Playing 4 on 5 on either side of the floor, defensive or offensive, is not a recipe for success. Eric Snow is not an offensive threat. No team of greatness has ever started a player with such a liability. Not everyone must be a star, but every player has to be a threat.

That being said, I offer the following list of less heralded players available that I feel are more complete or have greater upside than Eric Snow:

Juan Dixon - A player that nobody seems to want, but has a winning pedigree and a great basketball spirit in the mold of Sam Cassel. The kid's a winner and a leader, and he's about the team. If you're familiar with his story, you may find he'd be a great addition to our team.

Bob Sura - We all witnessed firsthand what he could do against the Rox, and that was with a bunch of scubs by his side. He's an all around guard.

Lindsay Hunter - He's a monster on defense. He's quick, handles the ball well, and shoots from outside well.

Troy Hudson - If he and TMac have a solid history, and if he can evolve his game into more control (A la Chauncey) he could be the greatest fit for the Rox. Another guard with all around game.

Rafer Alston - He's somewhat the player SF3 was supposed to be. His evolution from Street King to an NBA player has been very impressive (No love from the street, because he's NBA now ... no love from the NBA, because he's just a street baller). I think he's coming along quite well.

JVG will be a great teacher and director towards honing the PG skills of whoever we choose (Don't sleep on Gaines). I just think we're shortchanging ourselves with Eric Snow. We can do better, Houston.

    Welcome to "words."

    Again. ;)

anyway- I don't like the Snowman... Much rather utilize Lue if needed... and try for a FA starter if possible.

    My vote is for Barry.

He is 6-6, shoots over 50%, has nice assist numbers and will BURN you with the 3. Great for clutch situations - and would be loved like moochie once was for that reason.

We are going after PG's in this order:

    Barry
    Hudson
    Fisher

Snow leaves alot to be desired from a shooting standpoint.

    Barry
    TMAC
    JJ
    Howard
    Yao

All offense and not much Def, great we just became the Mavericks.
However we have a guy 7'5 in the middle and a 6'8 wing with all the skills in the world.

    Got my season tickets!!!!

I had a 12 game package last season and now I upgraded to half-season tickets (2 tickets together) on section 410....right at midcourt!!!

I cant afford all 22 games, so I am willing to share with fans who might want 3 to 4 games. I will make sure that all packages are balanced with good and bad teams to make it fair. You can email me at Sal_bejar@yahoo.com for more info. If you want more than 3 or 4 games, we can definitely work that out. Go Rox!!!

if you double both yao and mcgrady, suddenly it's 1 on 3. just in case you missed the houston/lakers series last season, let me tell you what happened : houston focused on stopping kobe and shaq (comparable to double teaming yao and mcgrady) and got burned by karl malone's mid range jump shot.

snow is a much more solid pg than fisher in that he plays ultra efficient (having played with ai), can be an offensive threat (please refer to games where ai was sitting out), and while he doesn't have a 3pt shot, houston should know by now that you dont need it to make double teams pay.

by the way, does anyone remember that marvelous dribbling display fisher put on in the finals? how many layups did he miss and how many times did he get blocked? i forgot.

I think since Fisher's played with Shaq, he'd fit very well with us. He plays hard D, he's clutch, and he knows how to get it to the big man.

Snow is way too expensive; and Fisher is just not that good.

I'm for Barry - that guy shoots about .500 as a guard, and his assist and steal numbers are excellent; plus, he is a great 3-point shooter that makes about 2 threes a game.

I don't want my PG jacking up 3's. What a waste. That was the old team, now we have much more versitility. Yes we need 3pt shooting from our Guard bench, but we don't have to have a PG who is a stud from the 3pt line. T-Mac, Ming, Jackson, and Howard/Taylor can score in many diffrerent ways. I am all for getting a backup guard that can shoot the rock, but it's not a priority for our starting PG. Pike would have been that guy, but after last season, I have my doubts.

If the Rockets are absolutely determined to get an old guy, then:

    1. Barry
    2. Snow

Fisher's not even on my list.

That Hinrich kid is untouchable, so we can drop that fantasy right now.

Hmmm, what do you think about these statements....?

"Yao can dunk. But that's it."
    Or
"McGrady can score. But that's it."
    Or
"JVG is a strict coach. But that's it."
    Or
"The only reason that Francis has assist is because Yao is on the team."

    Seriously,
So, how many assist can Snow get if we have McGrady and Yao?
How many points can Snow gets if he comes here? 1ppg? Or 10ppg like he normally does? And wouldn't we want that since we have a team that has Yao/McGrady? Or should get get a ball-hog PG that has a *shoot-first* mentality? I think you underestimate the role of the PG. I think you are infatuated with scoring.

As far as turnovers. How many turnovers has Snow had his whole career before Philly? Did you check that? I think it's safe to say that his low TO average is due to SNOW and not the system. The fact of the matter is that Snow has a brain. And if JVG implements a system that is different than Snow is used to (post pass entry), then Snow will learn and adjust (which means that his TO will remain low).

I was interested to see how Snow performed last year without Iverson (to see if he stepped up his game at all and improved his leadership), so I did some calculations.

Iverson missed 33 games last year. In those 33 games, Snow averaged...

    12.1 PPG
    7.3 APG
    3.2 RPG
    2.4 TO/G
    .423 FG%

Compare these numbers to his overall averages for the year:

    10.3 PPG
    6.9 APG
    3.4 RPG
    2.3 TO/G
    .413 PG%

It appears that Snow DID elevate his game a little bit with the absence of Iverson, and it looks like he CAN hold his own without a star in the lineup (Big Dog is NOT a star...). Also, while Iverson was gone, Philly managed to compile a 14-19 record (not too bad for a team that went 33-49 last year).

Just thought I'd share that. (I'm still pulling for Arroyo. :) )

I have learned to stop worrying and let CD take care of the team.

I would love to see the Rockets pick up another two players this offseason -- a backup center and a starting point guard. Whom we choose at guard depends a lot on how we judge Lue and Gaines. If CD and JVG think Gaines is a keeper, they may go after a Snow or a Barry and let Gaines grow into the role under the tutelage of an older player whose minutes will go down as Gaines matures. If they don't think Gaines is an NBA caliber guard, they may expend more effort trying to land a younger, more permanent point guard, such as Jamaal Tinsley or Kirk Hinrich.

Personally, after reading all the pluses and minuses (mainly minuses) of Derek Fisher and Eric Snow, I'm starting to like Tyronn Lue (NBA.com bio) more and more. He is:
    • 29th in the NBA in 3-point % at 38.3%
    • 26th in the NBA in assists per TO at 2.56
    • only 27, but has already played on two championship teams with a dominant center and a flashy guard
I'd still like to pick up Brent Barry, but I'm happy enough with our guards to think backup center is our #1 priority. I'd also like to upgrade the 4, but I don't see anyone beating our doors down to acquire Howard or Taylor....
