    Fegan would at $12m.

If Mo takes the exception, and Dream will drop all his other demands for $12m, why wouldn't you. It is the same amount of money for a two year, an identical commission for Fegan.

They can negotiate again next year, or compromise with a Team Option at $6-7m starting this year. There is no reason to think that Dream won't take equal money for one yr, or compromise on a Team Option.

Even still, why wouldn't you negotiate for a 1 yr as a bargaining chip to force them to come down on their demands. One thing is for sure:

barbourdog is a lousy negotiator who has already fallen for Fegan's initial demands.

Oooh, Fegan makes my legs buckle. He always makes me blink first.

Crispee Pants, I would tell Fegan to kiss my as****!, name one has-been star (in his old age), that has agreed to a one year deal (besides MJ, who was playing in top form). You might find Ewing or somebody willing to split a 4.5 million exception for one last pipe dream of a ring.

Do you honestly think that Mo would sign for the exception? According to most reports, Mo is seeking a 5-7million, multiyear contract. Then you got moochie, who would love the 4.5 million, that Dallas is offering, but would sign for less with the Rockets. But how much less? a 1 million dollar contract?, I do not think so!!!

Crispee, I have never heard of a worse negotiater than you in my life. If a business was for sell, and the highest bid (around the country) was 1 million, you would probably give them 5 million.

Get a reality check, if nobody in the NBA would give Hakeem more than the 4.5 million exception, why in the HELL would you agree to give him 12 million for one year (which once again, Feagn will never agree to a one year deal!!)

What would Feagan rather have? a percentage of a one year 10 million dollar contract? or a 2 year (guaranteed) 16 million dollar contact?

NIKE: I'll give you Nazr & MacCullogh, however Jackson?

    Stats (Career Averages):

    Olowokandi - PPG: 9.1, RPG 7.4
    Jackson - PPG: 13.2, RPG 7..5

Admittedly, Jackson put these numbers up for a portion of one season, but these numbers also reflect the games he did not start, or only played a portion of. After he got the starting gig, he put up better than decent numbers, something the Kandiman has never done (even for a portion of a season).

I like Keon Clark and Raef as well, so no argument there. But, I bet the teams each of those players plays for would agree with both of us as well. So who's to say that the Rockets will even have a chance of signing either of them away. The Raptors have all but given up on resigning Carter. With Oakley looking to get out of town this season, they'll need to keep Keon for any semblance of a future frontcourt. And with Dan Issel at coach, do you think he'd let a big man like Raef go as well?

I hear ya with the Dream arguement. My contention, however, is that Dream isn't looking for a one year deal. I think he's looking for respect...the kind of respect that money can only partially account for. I bet he thinks his agent will help him gain the respect he's looking for. I'll also bet Dream thinks he's got a couple of more years left in the league. He might, but how productive will those years be? As productive as the last 2-3?

Also, SA sure did sign with Houston for monetary reasons. He, or at least his agent, thought that taking a short term hit in salary, the Rockets would be able to give him huge contract (most likely larger than what the Jazz were offering) at the end of the stint (ala Joe Smith, but 'legal'). I'm not so sure the gamble is going to pay off, but I would wager he's not looking to find out next year (or the year after that). I think he's looking to sign big this year.

sigh, where is your math sense, man.

barbourdog: so when does $6m for two years add up to $16m. I'm talking $12m versus $12m.

Anyhow, this isn't about what will happen, this is about negotiating. You threaten 1 yr with Dream, and try your hardest to get Mo to do the 2 yr exception with a wink deal to maximum his career pay with Full Bird. If you don't even try the exception with Mo or a one yr with Dream, how are you going to give up something then during negotiations. Do you think Fegan expects $10m for 2 yrs...huh??? Do you think he's an idiot like me....huh???

Besides, just because you are convinced the way everything will play out, doesn't mean I can't mention how Mo' can make as much money by taking the exception for 2 yrs versus $5.5m for 6 yrs.

You mention that no vets sign for one yr. Have you NEVER heard of a person without Full Bird rights continuing to sign via exceptions. All we have to tell Mo' is, sorry dude, Dream is not back off. We don't have the cap room we expected back when your signed thinking that this was his last yr.

Dude, we are NOT UNDER THE CAP. We cannot pay Mo' more than the exception, right now!!! You merely negoatiate with him saying that we have every intention to sign Dream. The moment Mo' capitulates because he loves the offense and his role, then we have much, much better bargaining position with Dream. Why you are giving up on this best case is sad for Rocket's fans.

The whole idea is to hold off on big paydays until we have no possibility to be under the cap again...which is timed with Francis's big raise.

I am damn sure going to plead with Mo' to take the exception for 2 yrs in his best interest...at least that is the bluff. The bluff is to tell Mo that he needs a center. If he takes $7m, it straps our ability to land him a center. If he takes $5.5-6m, the exceptions route actually earns him more money over a career.

Both Dream and Mo' can maximize pay in my scenario, so why not sit down at the table and argue for that. If we land the glorious one yr deal and the exception, we can get cap room next yr. If not, play hardball and threaten to let Dream walk to keep your cap room for another day.

Do you not want to talk reasonably about the math behind this, or are you just going to keep bashing me as being stupid, yet Fegan is a smart negotiator for demanding $10m for 2 yrs.

I've been reading Barbourdg and Crispee show for a while now and I at first I was like what the hell. I see why Barbourdg said what he says but I think he is looking at the present where as Crispee is looking towards the future. Some pretty smart points in the topic but uhhh.....well its a good thing there is always Driver8 to clear things up. I do believe that what ever we say or think is right whatever rockets management ends up doing will be right....and I wouldn't try so hard to prove a point because then you start looking a little foolish and man would you look stupid if the Rockets did something totaly differant and you realise u been wrong. Thats why I stay back and read al the other inputs. its fun to watch differant opinions. U learn something and you start to form u'r own judgement...aight thats bout it....

Marc Jackson has only played about 40 or so NBA games. He came out of nowhere. Giving me his career stats means nothing. Guys like Adrian Griffen and Stephen Jackson put up solid numbers for half a season only to fade. Players like that have a VERY high risk, he's going to come with at least a 5 mill price tag, probably 6.

So then you think Shandon was just posturing for a max early bird. It's very hard to predict if we'd be under the cap two years from now. His decision to come here was based on the fact we were a veteran team with a SG opening. Max Early Bird would be a very large deal, larger than Cuttino's. I don't see the Rockets offering him more than Cuttino.

As for Raef, he and Issel do not get along.

Keon Clark: They drafted Michael Bradley, and just gave Davis and Jerome Williams huge money. How much do you give a 3rd big man, when you have cheaper alternatives (Bradley, and they got N'Diaye as well I believe).

Nike: why did Keon get buried on the bench in the Eastern championship series?

Obviously, the thrill of playing RealGM and saying what *you* would do is utterly lost on Viper. It is not an argument, man. Well, maybe for barberdog it was.

It is a good thing we have Viper to tell us not to write anything for fear of making a fool of ourselves later.

thx man. I'll be sure not to make a fool of myself. Maybe we should all just stop posting and wait around for Viper to get bored and post something creative and provocative to get us out of lurk mode.

NIKE: If Keon is the 3rd big man on a team not willing to spend money on him, why would the Rockets want him?

On Jackson, I conceded the fact he's got very little playing time from which to make an informed decision. However, since he is not really a rookie (one could always go back to the tape of his games in Europe for further analysis), I'd give him a little more leeway than you're willing to. Plus, as I've stated, I saw the guy play like 5 times last season. Each time he improved. The guy had 17 double-doubles last season (hell, dream only had 14). Jackson scored as season high 31 pts in one game against Minn. (29 in another) and grabbing 16 boards in another game. Stephen Jackson and Adrian Griffin's numbers don't even come close to those. Bottom line: Marc Jackson would have been the runaway rookie of the year if he hadn't tweaked his groin. Not even close.

Finally, on SA. I don't think they'd ever give him more than Cuttino either. But, he signed before Cuttino was ever even considered a starter in this league by Rudy. Why else would he have been signed as a SG?

Which is exactly why Shandon needs to be cut loose. No need of paying 5 mill to a guy who won't be starting If you give Shandon early bird as a "reward" there's no way you can justify not giving Dream whatever he wants.

To put this in perspective, Jackson (48) played in LESS games than Dream (58) last year. I also think Jackson's rebounding numbers were skewed by what some may call the Brand effect-lack of other playing bodies (Fortson, Dampier, and Foyle seemed to be eternal injuries), and a lot of rebounds. From what I've heard he suffered the usual GS big man curse, a large slew of chronic injuries. As an aside note, didn't he go like 0-9 vs. us, and our intimidating post defense?

Even Swopa would admit that the shooting of Golden State is atrocious-Jamison was playing small forward, Hughes at shooting guard, and Mookie at the point aren't NBA players because of their 3 point strokes.

Jackson is going to want a long term contract, and it will be for at least 5 mill if he leaves. Maybe you throw Jackson a 3 year deal, but there is a VERY good chance he busts, burns out, and/or injuries. Do you risk Cato II, in terms of return on your contract? I don't, especially when you have a real chance at a Lafrentz next year, and have Hakeem in the interim. I'd bet he ends up in Seattle or stays in GS.

With Hakeem, you make the public happy, have your legend retire a Rocket, and get a chance at 3 better big men, and another year with maneuverability. You can give Cato his 3rd chance, and if by some lightning strike he actually pans out, you have 10 mill under the cap, a load of depth, and solid talent signed at all positions.

Nazr is the 3rd, maybe 4th big man on Atlanta, but just about everyone agrees 5 mill is right for him. Heck, Maculloch was accumulating splinters, yet people are talking about MCE.

I hear ya, NIKE. I guess I'm just looking for some change. I'm not exactly thrilled with the prospect of another season of crossing my fingers everytime Dream touches the ball...hoping the same fate that was waiting for Barkley isn't awaiting him. I'm also not impressed with Mo Taylor at power forward. He's like Jamison at PF, no inside game. Who's going to muscle inside (especially on D) for the future of this club? I'm really not looking for an offensive minded PF/C, I'd just like to see a guy that hustles and that can play D. To me Jackson does that. His potential downside smacks of Cato II, granted, but I'm not convinced there are other options.

I still like the prospect of acquiring Ben Wallace somehow. And I still hold out hope for CWebb, how deluded that may sound.
