I am going to the dentist next Monday and I was wondering if he could answer a question I have. That thing of mine that hangs down in the back of my mouth/throat becomes swollen sometimes and it get big enough to where it hangs down in my throat and actually resting on the very back of my tongue. It is very discomfortable and it make it hard for me to breathe and/or swallow. I'm asking because I remember somebody on the BBS had their thing cut off and I was wondering why. I mean will the dentist be able to tell me or would I need to see a regular doctor for this if he can't then I will make an appointment to see the doctor? Also my mother said I used to have problem with my tonsils and adenoids to the point when I was younger where they want to remove my tonsils. Could that have anything to do with it?

yes, you can get the shape of your uvula altered. it's done in a dentists office, so you should definitely ask your dentist if he can do it. Though, I'm not sure if your case warrants you doing it. Chronic swelling is another situation alltogether. you might have to go to an Ears/Nose/Throat doctor.

Do you still have your tonsils?

If so, nut up and get them removed. I used to get sick and sore throats all the time until I got mine removed 3 years ago.

Yes, still have them. I thought that doctors were wary of removing them now because they serve an immunological function?

yes, they are hesitant about removing them, but they will remove them if you keep getting sore throats and things of similar nature. It's not helping your body that you keep getting sick - it aggrivates the situation.

Well I made the appointment for surgery today. It is supposed to happen on July 21. How did your's go Tex? The doc told me I could be in pain for up to 2 weeks and that I would have to adjust to a soft-ffod diet for a while. He said adults don't heal as fast as children do so it won't be as good doing it now as it could have been when I was a child. I'm still contemplating whether or not to go through with the procedure. So Tex, mind giving me your thoughts on your procedure?

i had my tonsils removed when i was like 7 and i remember being in bed for about a week afterwards. all i ate was icecream so that was cool. you will probably get nauseous a few times after eating, but other than that its a relatively pain free recovery. good luck.

Yeah but you were 7 and the doc told me the recovery for an adult is much longer and more painful than that of a child.

Oh yeah the surgery I am having is called Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP. I've been looking at sites I found on Google and they have made me even more nervous. Has anybody here had this procedure done? Please, if you have let me know how your's went. Thanks!
