Okay i just noticed that both Boki and Nachbar were the 15th pick in the draft. Both of them were drafted based on some major potential that they had whether it was in europe or Louisville. So who do you think is the player that will come off the bench this year and really show the rockets something. (granted if Gaines stays here and isn't part of another deal. I will have to put my money on Boki in this one just because of the things i have seen him do towards the end of the season. Ultimatly i would love to have both of them step up in the respective roles live up to the hype they had coming into the league and really show everyone they can play.
I'll go with Boki. Like a lot of people, I have a gut feeling that if he gets the minutes, he's going to bust out this year. I don't know much about Gaines, but if he was a #15, there must be some potential there. How old is he?
I went with Boki. At least the team he can't break into the rotation on is a winning team. Gaines couldn't even get minutes on the worst team in the league.
I voted for Boki primarily because he has a year of JVG's system under his belt. Do not discount Gaines as a PG yet -- he suffered through his rookie year under coaching turmoil. Let's give him a bye until he has had at least half a season learning JVG's system.
Reece Gaines was often compared to beloved Jimmy Jackson during his college years. He seemed to be a very mature player at Louisville but he's struggled with the PG position in the NBA. I think that if he's moved to SG he can be a productive player that makes smart decisions and doesn't force the issue.
Please no more "_____ to the 2" discussions. Maybe we should see what JVG decides to do with him. I imagine he knows a thing or two about basketball?
Im not gonna label Gaines a bust yet...like thumbs said, he hasnt really had a good chance with a good team with a stable system to show if he can play. I really believe Boki will showup even better than the end of last year... We can really hope that both of these guys live up to their potential...if they do, it will be a great day for the Rockets.
well the things with gaines is he is 6'6" and he is not really a PG in college he managed the posisition but not all that great. he is a better 2 guard and everyone that has seen him play says the same thing. He is more of a guard that can play both positions if need be. The comparison to Jim Jackson is very correct.
Based on people's description of Gaines, I don't see him playing anything but garbage minutes until he develops a three-point shot and proves he can play in JVG's system of team defense.
yeah he didn't play but 10 minutes a game over in Orlando. here is his scouting report. NBA Comparison: Jim Jackson Strengths: Very smooth combo guard. Played point his first two seasons, and can legitimately play the point guard position. Excllent ball handling ability and composure. A smart player with great maturity. Passes well, and has a solid overall game. Has a quick first step and takes players to the basket well or can find an open man off the drive. Strong character guy, not arrogant. Really passes well of the drive. Weaknesses: He doesn't do anything amazingly well, very solid, but he isn't fantastic at anything, Must continue to develop his game. Needs to become a little more selfish and take over offensively. A little better in the half court set, than on the break. He can definitely improve on is finishing with authority. Notes: Reece once was held scoreless for the first 29 minutes and ended up with 26 in a last-second win. Senior Year Stats YR GMS MIN PTS REB AST TO A/T STL BLK PF FG% FT% 3P% PPS 2002-03 34 32.2 18.2 3.1 4.9 3.1 1.6/1 1.8 0.1 2.5 .466 .731 .401 1.49
Hopefully both can develop into at least good, serviceable backups. I'm optimistic about both of their futures.
Well, Gaines was not necessary to make the trade work, so Houston must have wanted him. JVG, CD, and Les must see or believe something to negotiate him into the trade.
Boki has a year under JVG. I think that he showed signs of improvement during the playoffs and I think he will get some quality minutes this year.
lol not sure who will be the better 15th pick since I don't know gaines that well I'll put my faith in boki to get his shot swatted more often :]
Everybody here is missing the point..... Not only did we just get top 5 player in the league but we also got another young prospect to groom. He was a near lotto pick this year and we just got him in addition to McGrady. This makes up for us not having a 1st rounder the past two years. Comparing him & Nachbar is pointless because Gaines can play PG/SG while Nachbar is a forward. This guy is a Jim Jackson clone. Give him some time and we could see the same results.
As you can see we are not comparing them to each other, just the fact that both were number 15 picks that really didn't get to play in either system, and we are wondering which one will step up becasue the way it is Gaines will back up the 2 guard and Boki will back up the 3 so which one will shine. That is the question.
