Just speculation on my part, but the contract Watson signed had to rub NFL office the wrong way. I'm wondering if that might have any bearing on punishment handed out??
    Again just speculation.

Zeke got suspended even when they attorney declined to press charges against Elliott due to "conflicting and inconsistent information."
Just because the NFL said that despite the lack of legal ramifications, the NFL holds the right to punish players even without charges due to its personal conduct policy.

I really think Watson is going to be suspended, but I think its 6-8 games, not the entire year like some media are saying.

He should have done this when MIA was snooping around his carcass. Worse case is he would have settled the others by now and these new ones may have not even come forward or could have been settled quietly. His advisors aren't very good.

For us, I think the NFL has to be thinking at least a full season suspension, whether they move to suspend 17 games is another story. The NFLPA has apparently threatened to target owner's conduct to defend Watson. I haven't heard of any owners being accused of 24 offenses, which I believe is still unprecedented for any NFL employee. Personally, I'd like to see him suspended for 2022 and a part of 2023 (get some of that big money to make him hurt). That would send a clear message to NFL employees about their conduct and would also be great for our draft position in 22/23.

Watson deserves to be suspended for embarassing the league with his sordid behavior.

Forgot about that one. Ha, that Jameis Winston. The "F her in the p***y" screamer, crab legs stealer, and Uber driver toucher. Not great for the character assessment, but it seems like people see him as more of an immature goof instead of a total bad guy...because he always appears to be an immature goof.

Yeah, ultimately people keep forgetting that his suspension isn't based solely on innocent or guilty, it's based on the MASSIVE black eye he's given the league from getting accused of assaulting 26 different women. And if nothing else, the fact that he had 66 different women give him a message in an 18 month period (almost 4 DIFFERENT women per month). No matter the excuse or accusation, that looks shady and makes the NFL look bad.

Why do people keep acting like the Browns committed some grievous sin by offering that contract?

Players have been negotiating based on guaranteed money since forever.

Any player could demand a fully guaranteed deal, but the natural tradeoff would be a shorter contract with a smaller overall amount.

If Watson's contract had 1 non-guaranteed dollar attached it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

Because they gave the first fully guaranteed contract, with provisions to offset a suspension, to a sexual predator that hasn’t played in a year. To add to that, that’s the only reason he went to the Browns.
He doesn’t deserve it, even without the off field issues. He’s not the best QB in the league, not even top 5.

Say what you want about Watson, but his advisors managed to get him an annual raise, more guaranteed money, and protection from a suspension... all while he was sitting out a year and facing a slew of legal issues. I think they've done pretty well.

As people have repeatedly noted, settling the lawsuits doesn't help him avoid a suspension anyway.

These are two separate justifications. Is the objection financial or moral?

Morally, sure. But remember, there were 4-5 other teams lined up behind them to sign him.

Financially? Like I said, negotiating based on guarantees has been happening forever. The Browns didn't cross some rubicon. Players have looked at non-guaranteed money as nothingburgers for decades now. Hell, Kirk Cousin's last three contracts have all been fully guaranteed (and based on performance way overpaid). Nobody made a stink about it.

Cousins was short term and looking back commensurate with his numbers (actually really good).
He wasn’t paid like the top guy at his position.
Even still, I don’t have a problem with fully guaranteeing contracts if players can get them.

Watson, being paid like the best QB in the league and fully guaranteed, while skirting some financial obligations with his contract isn’t something he deserves.
Unfortunately for him, the moral side and the performance side doesn’t equal what he received. Therefore the scorn is justified imo.

That contract should have been for Mahomes, Allen, Brady, Burrow or even Lamar. Not Watson

You all know this will all be forgotten once the suspension is over and he's back to playing football full time, this'll just be a story of the past and if he's winning then it'll def be forgotten as Deshaun will be the franchise qb they've been longing for as long as they've existed and will be hailed as the hero who resurrected Browns football back to relevancy. Its funny how people are actually discussing his contract being voided or anything close to that. Cleveland knew what they were doing and they're content with the consequences bc they know eventually he'll be on the field playing and all of this will be in the past. Just hope as texans fans he doesn't do too well.

Exactly like happened with Big Ben, he won 2 superbowls, and people forgot about his past about the rape and sexual assault case against him.
like you said people will forget about this if the Browns play in the super bowl, and yeah its stupid to think the Browns would void his contract, they wont get the texans picks back, and would get a step back with no QB and no 1st round picks.

also look what happened with Kareem Hunt, he assaulted a woman, got suspended, and he is playing for the Browns, and since he is playing good, and Cleveland having a great RB duo with Chubb and Hunt, they forgot about his problems.
