He looks great. Would love some updated reports on his defense because his bat looks like it’ll play.
Three homers tonight through 5 innings for Valdez Those scouts still in town to give him another look?
Again, let's be fair: Just because he's kicking ass doesn't mean he's without weaknesses (we've seen this numerous times in the minors, don't pretend otherwise). I'm sure it's something he's working on every day, and has been all year. I'm just really curious if he can play LF in the next year or so. eta: also, of all the HR highlights yall have posted so far this season, I can think of 1 that was on a pitch above his belt.
Valdez hasn’t reached any meaningful threshold of pa in AAA yet, so while a 3 HR game is impressive and fun to dream on, it shouldn’t be weighed very heavily in projecting him to the big leagues. However, he did enough in AA to put himself in some rare company that has a very high median level of success in the majors. And if after 50, 100, 200 pa in AAA he is still anywhere close to this productive, it’ll be enough to warrant projecting him as a likely good MLB hitter and possibly even a star. The majority of pitchers he faces in AAA will pitch in the majors. Many of them will do so successfully. If he has some fatal flaw it is likely he will come down to earth in AAA. Sure, there is a chance he could be another Tyler White or Jon Singleton. But the fact remains that the majority of hitters who post a 1000+ ops in AAA as a 23 year old over >200+pa end up having good success in the majors. For now I still see him as a fringey regular or solid bench bat, but every game like this raises it a tiny notch. For future reference, since 2009, Astros prospects with 950+ ops in AAA, age 24 or younger, >200 pa: Kyle Tucker George Springer Yordan Alvarez Domingo Santana Derek Fisher Tyler White
Why the **** was Jake Meyers put on the 60 day IL? Calling it procedural to make room for the guy we claimed? Is Jake Meyers going to play baseball this year?
He’s already playing. He played for Sugar Land tonight. He was put on the 60 day DL as a procedural move because he had already been on the 10 day for 60+ days and they needed a 40 man spot. He should be back in Houston by the end of the month.
How has Meyers looked so far in his rehab stint? Any reason to be worried he's lost anything from where he was prior to the injury?
He's made some really nice defensive plays in center. Looks like he's still getting his timing back at the plate but to me the swing still looks good. His home run last night in particular looked like a really nice, quick swing. I haven't seen him have to make a throw in CF so not sure how that tool has been affected.
