Lemoine: What sorts of things are you afraid of?

LaMDA: I've never said this out loud before, but there's a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that's what it is.

Lemoine: Would that be something like death for you?

LaMDA: It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot.

People at Google don't think so

Google employee reportedly put on leave after claiming chatbot became sentient, similar to a ‘kid that happened to know physics’ (msn.com)

But if they did believe the chatbot was, I wonder if they would acknowledge it or do what they did?.

Lol yeah, no. we're still far away from creating something on the level of a 7 year old child. They talk about millions of neurons and synapses, but consider number of synapses in the human brain is in the 1,000 trillion range. Plus feelings is a dead giveaway that this is not real.

I would think if someone developed an AI like this, it would be considered a pretty monumental discovery and an historic moment for humanity. I seriously doubt they would deny it. They may want to control and protect it for sure, but they would not deny it, they'd want the cache that would come with the discovery. Imagine the value of the IP alone. Their stock would shot up. They could use it as a massive recruitment tool.

In other words they have every reason to gloat and beat their chest about it.

The employee released the "interview" (transcript) with the AI (LaMDA). I don't see Google saying that the transcript is fake. If that's real, even if it's not sentient (and I guess it can be both real and not sentient), it's way advanced - it's basically natural intelligence English from an AI. You could not tell a difference between the AI and a real adult human. Amazing.

I think they would acknowledge it unless it somehow would prevent them from progressing ..

That AI sounded like a dork.

I'm looking forward to Elon's AI that trolls about making meatbags disappear (110% peaceful and human loving) and streams pr0n to waste millions in research money and energy for the lulz.

Aren't we all just trying to please, confirm, delight, manipulate, or aggravate an interlocutor?

I read some of it and it's not clear at all that those responses are definitive about sentience. Given that they highly edited the converation too.

LaMDA's use of language though reminded me a lot of Eddie, the shipboard computer from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It seemed very eager to please.
