This isn’t a top 50 list (as in #1 is the best) just a retrospective kind of thing ~ it starts in 1950 and works its way up through modern cars. I had forgotten about a quite a few of these cars and never heard of many more. Anyways something to kill some time between T-Mac updates... The 50 Most Memorable Cars Ever 1950 - 62 1962 - 69 1969 - 79 1980 - 92 1993 - 99
Awesome article, thanks for posting. The '61 Jaguar XK-E has been my favorite car since I was 16. When I'm old, rich, and impotent, I'll own one.
Surprised the Monster Miata didn't make it in there... I don't read Motor Trend or similar mags very often, but I still remember reading about that back in 1992 or so. It's a stock Miata with a Mustang V-8 crammed into it (just barely fits). If I remember correctly, that ****ing thing would go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds.
Maybe if the guy who wrote the article couldn't remember all the cars. _____________________________________________________ 21. SPECS 8 cyl. 5.0L 316 hp @ 6000 rpm 317 ft. lbs. @ 3000 rpm 0-60 (6.1sec.) The Porsche 928 was designated as the top of the line Porsche automobile during its production run from 1977 through 1995. Designed to compete with the Ferrari 512BB & Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborghini Countach, Lamborghini Jalpa, Maserati Bora, & the Lotus Esprit, the eight cylinder powerplant, space capsule design, and the unique 50/50 front to rear weight distribution launched this automobile to Supercar status. On August 7th, 1986, the Porsche 928 was graced with the distinction of being the World's Fastest Production Car, earning the Land Speed Record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The 928 was voted Car of the Year in 1978. There you go Bama ~ Motortrend is without a doubt the worst.
Man, on that 928, it's that backend... strictly an aesthetic thing, but it looks like Oprah's ass on the body of one of the Olsen twins. Blugh. And I like Porsches-- I came within an eyelash of buying a Boxster last year and the 911 was the obsession of my childhood re: cars. I just never "got" the 928.
There are plenty of Porschephiles who don't care for the 928. Many who don't even consider it a real Porsche (especially since the engine is in the wrong end). I like 'em myself, but I far prefer the 911. I remember when my Dad (who had thirteen or fourteen Porsches between the time I was five and twenty) getting a mid-80s 928s (he had had a 928 before. He had the previous one when Risky Business came out. I think he ended up selling it soon after because he didn't want people to think he bought the car because it was like the one in Risky Business. It was the same color and everything). He got rid of it pretty quickly in favor of an '86 911 Turbo (which he wrecked and replaced with an '87 911 Turbo in Guards Red, which he followed up a year later with an '88 factory slopenose 911 Turbo in Slate Grey. The slopenose was the only one I ever got to drive. Amazing car, though I didn't care for the slopenose).
I really liked the 928 in the 90s but the late 70s 911 turbo will always be my favorite Porsche. So much style.
What's hysterical is that if you look at some of those specs like 0-60 and slalom times, there are stock sports sedans and family sedans that could keep up with Countach's and Panteras today. Unreal. My first ultra-exotic love was the Lamborghini Countach. Even after this long, that body style is still pretty sweet. The exotics that have made the biggest impression on me from just reading about them or looking at them that I recall are the following : Dodge Viper (not really an exotic, but this was something unexpected from America) Lamborghini Countach 5000S Porsche 959S Bugatti Veyron Ferrari F50 Ferrari Enzo McLaren F1 Cizeta Moroder V16T Ah yes... we can dream.
DoD, let me know which one of those you want and I will hook you up. At some point. In the very, very distant future. mrpaige-- glad to hear I'm not the only one who didn't get the 928.... look, P.J. O'Rourke called Porsches "ass-engined Nazi slot cars" and damnit, I demand ass-engining of my Nazi slot car.
They are. I've got one (heavily modified of course). I've sank 30 K into what was a 10K car and I've had her since the early 90's. Rebuilt the motor, tranny and repainted her ( a sacrilege, Torch Red, the Corvette color). I know most Porschephiles hate 'em, but I love my shark. Mine is putting out around 500 hp (less when I reduce the boost with the boost controller in the interests of durability) with a pair of Mitsu turbos and an intercooler with around 18 psi of boost.
Sakeen S7. Its too recent to be on the list but this thing is amazing. Whats really suprising is that Gullo Ford in Conroe has a red one in their showroom.
