Sleeping man stuck on Florida draw bridge as it rises
    By Ben Hooper

June 27 (UPI) -- A Florida woman who spotted a man sleeping on a draw bridge captured video of when he woke to find the bridge rising.

Khadija Andrews of Miami said she was walking to yoga about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday when she noticed someone sleeping on the South Miami Avenue bridge.

Andrews said she heard the chiming bells heralding the bridge's rising a few moments later.

"By the time I hit Brickell City Centre, I could start hearing the bells, so I turned around and something made me think of the guy," Andrews told WVSN-TV. "I was like, 'Did he get off? Where is he?' And I realized I never saw him get up and walk away."

Andrews and other witnesses attempted to warn the bridge operator, but were unable to get his attention.

"So we're literally witnessing the guy slide down as he's sleeping," Andrews told WPLG-TV.

She said the man woke up and grabbed onto a railing, which kept him from falling until the bridge lowered again.

Andrews said the man was able to walk away and did not appear to be seriously injured.

She said she previously had her own scary moment on a downtown draw bridge.

"So, I was running and I guess the guy didn't see me," Andrews recalled. "I got stuck on the bridge and I ended up having to sprint and run over the arm guard."
