What evidence do you have to support that Barry is the better passer? Snow averaged more assists and less TOs than Barry last year. Snow plays more like a prototypical point guard, whereas Barry is more of a tweener. Snow is also a better leader, and is already used to playing with a superstar guard in Iverson, who he helped to win a scoring title not long ago. For some reason, most people on this board get a stiffy for Barry, but I'd rather have Snow running the team anyday.
I'd rather have someone who shot better than 11% from the 3 point line and 41% from everywhere else http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3045
maybe we can get brent barry and john barry for a discount. do they want to play together? we would add some needed shooting with the 2.
That's a misleading stat, since he only took eighteen shots from beyond the arc for the whole season! I don't dispute that Barry is the better shooter, but I think that with Yao and T-Mac, we won't need a whole lot of extra offense, and would be better off with a playmaking point guard like Snow.
We may not need a lot of extra offense from a playmaking perspective, but we most certainly will need people who can hit the open 3. Even with Steve and Yao we were able to generate tons of wide open looks for our shooters. We should get even more of those with T-mac drawing lots of attention. One of the most important qualities that I think our next starting PG must have is the ability to hit the open 3, and there are very few who are better at that than Barry.
I've been trying to raise Snow's stock on this board for two monthes and Chad Ford of all people does it in one day? Pathetic. Snow is one of the league's smartest players. He's a steady performer that doesn't rely on athleticism to get the job done. Beautiful passer, great in the halfcourt and on the break. Best defensive PG in the league; I don't know if you guys really understand that. He won't get lost in his rotations like Francis and rotate five seconds late when his man gets a wide open look. He won't throw the ball out of bounds. And he'd be a leader. An extension of JVG on the court. He's not a good three point shooter, but he's an okay mid range shooter (no worse than Steve) and doesn't take bad shots. AND JUST TO CLARIFY: You guys are calling Snow slow, and yet you're saying the Rockets should pick up Brent Barry? It's not like Brent's exactly the quickest cat in the league; and for a 6'1, 180lb PG, Derek Fisher ain't exactly speedy himself. Bottom line: T-Mac and Jim Jackson will both take 300-450 three point attempts by themselves. We don't need Snow to be chucking treys with those two on board.
Snows lack of 3-point shooting doesn’t bother me. He’s a good enough middle distance shooter. You don’t have to be a great 3-point shooting team to compete in the NBA. The Spurs, Lakers, Piston, and T-wolves are consistently among the bottom of the league in 3-pointers attempted. I guess it comes down to what type of team you envision the Rockets being. If you want them to be a Dallas/Sacramento run-and-gun type of team, Barry probably helps the Rockets become that. If you want the Rockets to be a blue collar type of team like the Pistons/Spurs, Snow is the choice. The way I see it, the only way the Rockets are going to improve next season is if the defense remains as good, if not better than it was last season, PLUS, they add on the offense that Mcgrady and Howard bring. This current group of players is way too soft and there are way too many offensive-oriented players. We want to build a team that is a great playoff team, not just a good regular season team.
Brent Barry will turn 33 on December 31. If we give him a four-year contract, it wouldn't be too shabby. He has a great outside shot. His defense at the 1 would not be great, though. I would prefer Eric Snow except that his contract is grotesque. Now, if we could flip Juwan Howard into, say, Antonio Daniels (I don't think the contracts would match up) then each team (Sonics and us) would be getting something good.
I'd rather the Rox pick up Snow, but if they could get Barry as well that would be nice. I still think Daniels could be a good pickup for a pg, at least for the backup role.
Because Philly's looking to move in a new direction, smartass. Because Iverson will be playing point again for the first time in six years so that guys like Willie Green and Andre Iguodala can get more playing time. Because Greg Buckner has four more years left on his contract like Aaron Mckie and DC as two more. Because Allen Iverson will be making upwards of $18 million in two seasons. Because Jim O'Brien wants to surround Iverson with shooters. Because Philly is looking to inject youth into their lineup. NOT because Snow isn't a good player. He is no longer a good fit in Philadelphia. He'd be a good fit here.
I don't know if this makes any difference, but didn't Rick Barry, his dad, play his last few years with us? Maybe Rick has good things to say about the Rox and has an influence on Brent? Who knows- these days, so many are estranged from their parents that it's hard to say how that would help his decision.
