EXACTLY!! How many of those people here in Texas who are saying "Schools need to Better Security" are the same people who contested their home property taxes this year??? Here in Texas your property taxes are what pays for schools to fund things like bullet proof glass around the admin entry site, or pays the salary for parking lot security. Also there's the issue of our brilliant Texas leadership giving massive tax breaks to companies who contribute nothing and leave the funding to home owners. How much money in taxes does Elon Musk pay that goes to Austin ISD?? Here in Texas that ALL comes from home owners. Even a Federal Bill still has to go through Gregg Abbott and his cronies so there's no guarantee that even if Biden and Congress passed a 4 trillion dollar bill that Abbott and co. will put that money where it needs to go. Right now in Texas at least the system is setup to where each school district determines their own security measures based on the funding that they get at the city level which is funded mostly through property taxes. There's no way to decouple the conversation about "hardening schools" from your property taxes here in Texas.
But also - make sure guns need no permits or training. And make sure not to prevent people with mental illnesses from getting guns. Oh and also don't do anything about mental illness.
Thanks for bringing up this area of focus I think we all can agree on. What do you think of changing our tax laws to increase funding to pay for more security measures? Also since I have like a dozen members of my extended family and even more that are friends in teaching, I know that the layouts of our schools are mostly designed for safety measures with the single entry point and often funneled through the admin check in with multiple heavy duty doors to go through before you get to where the kids are during the day. My daughters school is a barb wire fence away from being a prison. What kind of additional security measures to the infrastructure could you take in your opinion?? Especially ones that aren't large expenses.
Which the question from the press should have been how many mental illness bills are you planning to get passed this year and what measurable results are you projecting to show as outcomes to that bill? Then watch how quickly he pivots to "well I mean it's a problem with our culture causing people to be violent" etc. etc. and blaming Hollywood and video games. Which then should have a follow up of "what bills are you passing to stop children from playing video games." A free press simply being able to do their job puts all these talking points to bed in 2 quick questions. Abbott and Co. have blood on their hands but they don't care because they know they'll never be questioned in a serious way, and held to account because they have a propaganda ecosystem that protects them like any fascist does in any political system of government.
I still remember this day vividly. Scary sh** cause I was 5 yrs old at the time. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1992-09-19-mn-628-story.html As a teacher, it hurts to see communities go through this again and again. Without a doubt, I would take a bullet for any of our students/families.
That’s fine but there won’t be nearly enough grant money to pay for every school Did you see Abbot get asked if he would then except the expanded Medicaid to help pay for mental healthcare? Spoiler alert he said he would not.
I wonder if "good schools" have half the hardening of schools boujie folk don't dare relocating towards. Maybe all it takes for politicians and "concerned elites" to act is for crazies to walk into private schools and do the same thing.
Basically the solution is that we can't do anything, it's up to people to get the mental help they need. But we can give you thoughts and prayers
GOP: Thoughts and Prayers and we aren't going to do anything Dems: Thoughts and Prayers and were gonna try and pass some legislation but even if it passes it won't do anything. Wonderful.
I don't see how you can blame the Dems on this one. They aren't the ones blocking everything from even coming up for a vote.
... and we also have the most stringent eligibility guidelines in the country for non-disabled adults.
GOP deserves blame and so the Dems. The Dems aren't proposing anything that would stop mass shootings.
This simply is not true, the last 40 years have numerous bills and proposals from dems on various areas of gun control that have all been shot down by the GOP
Current proposals center around universal background checks which wouldn't have stopped the massacre in Uvalde, as Salvador Ramos would have passed a background check.
You don't know that, he might have he might not have...but it is at least a step in the right direction. DD
But, if the argument is 'mental health', what mental health check did Ramos undergo before purchasing his weapons?
