Yep, that is the biggest fear - but we can't govern by fear.

With todays tech why do we need people in an actual war zone to perform that job if it is so unsafe. Stay home, save lives.

This is where the whole "I have to oppose everything Biden does" schtick goes wrong and requires y'all to say extraordinarily stupid things.

Kissinger, Hillary's moral compass. 2016 election, between a rock and a hard place.

The final territorial settlement will be closer to what could have been negotiated in MInsk 2, which was pushed by France and Germany and Europe, but which the US and the Ukraine no doubt egged on by the US refused to contemplate than what seems to be the desire of Ukraine or the US/Nato. In Minsk 2 Crimea was to remain Russian, The two Easter Regions would have semi-autonomous regions of Ukraine.

Under what is more likely now is that the two Eastern Regions will likely be "independent" countries under more Russian influence than the semi-autonomous Ukraine regions contemplated by Minsk 2. Russian will most likely maintain the land bridge to Ukraine exemplified in Meuripol sp?

Ukraine is more likely to be a part of Nato FWIW and possibly accepted into the Eurozone if they can as eventually develop economically enough to not just be a welfare project the Euro Zone which Europe will probably not really want to undertake.

Of course there is great motivation to continue the war for years by the US military industrial complex, and perhaps by the Russian military industrial complex, politicians in Kiev and Washington and European Capitals.

The bulks of Russians like other folks with enough nationalistic propaganda will rally around the flag despiter attention given to dissidents (remember Bush-Cheney Iraq) so Russia will not reasonably be defeated say like WW II Germany or Japan. Any analogy to our efforts in the proxy war in Afghanistan are really not that valid.

If Minsk 2 was done, whats to stop Russia from just fortifying it's newly gained regions before going for more land again when it's rearmed and Ukraine has less resources? On 23 Feb they were still saying they were not going to attack, how can their words still be trusted. At this point the only deterrence is lots of arms, capability and willingness to fight. Giving away land now just makes it easier for them to grab more later.

I don't want dead diplomats or a war. I don't see how that is dumb. I think having people there is a political move just like having our politicians go there.

The domino theory. If you don't take over Russian and depose Putin, what is to stop Putin and Russia from just attacking Poland and Germany or whatever.

Regarding Minsk 2 here is Kissinger, no pacifist and the NY also not pacifists stating a more nuanced view than the proverbial domino theory that you always have to have prolonged wars for peace cause you know ..............

by creating deterrence through strength of arms, not words on paper. despite poland's brash statements vs moldova's more measured tone, moldova is a much more likely target in the coming years.
