Let's get the party started early! Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and also known as Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day) is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating emancipation of African American slaves. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1866, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States, and since 2021, as a federal holiday, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.
It's pretty hilarious and weird that all of my friends who work for the fed or downstream of the fed suddenly have tomorrow off. Like, I'm sure a lot of meetings and deadlines and stuff just got pooped on.
2 of the 14 Reps who voted against making this a holiday are from Texas. Ronny Jackson - Trump's former doctor Chip Roy - My Rep in Blanco County (and Austin and elsewhere), he's an ******* but he actually believes in his assholery (he just wants the government to do nothing, ever), so I can respect that a bit.
I'm all for this and not to throw shade, but Biden should have made election day a national federal holiday as well. Would impact minority lives far more than recognizing Juneteenth.
The dumbasses got played. The measure passed the Senate via unanimous consent - there was obviously no stopping it in the House, but the morons voted on record against it (and voted against recognizing the police who kept them from being lynched on 1/6) - thiere is literally no reason to vote against a bill you have no chance of stopping and that is insanely popular (even if you're a newsmax mypillow person, free holiday is free holiday). There was no upside to them to vote against, all downside. They took the downside. Thanks for the owngoal losers.
I'm sure if there was a bill in front of him to do that, he'd sign it. Why is this President Biden's fault?

Walmart is recalling its ice cream commemorating Juneteenth after it received heavy backlash on social media, with many critics calling out the company for using the holiday as a marketing scheme. “Share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope,” the packaging on the swirled red velvet and cheesecake flavored ice cream reads. Juneteenth happened in Galveston, so it must have some Tilman Ferttita and Sea Gull flavoring
