    He didn't lose; he got to keep millions in furniture sales for his promotion. His bets are like paying an insurance premium, which is what he used to do before insurance companies stopped taking the risk. He comes out better when he loses his bets. The payout on a winning bet is just to breakeven for furniture refunds. If he loses then he's just out on the money he wagered which is significantly less than the refund amount if he had won.
