Like most low ball players, they like the tools. But they have to show they can be developed. That's usually unknown.
Astros get: RHP Zack Wheeler Phillies get: CF Chas McCormick RHP Peter Solomon RHP Enoli Paredes Astros bolster the rotation and get an excellent Game 2 starter to follow Verlander. Phillies improve what is one of the worst defensive outfields, and have a contingency plan for Odubel Herrera's impending FA. Peter Solomon is blocked and gets a chance in Philly. Paredes can possibly help their struggling bullpen.
Zero percent chance. For so many reasons. All the things you said are at least somewhat true. But the Phillies, who intend to compete for at least a wild card spot this year, are not trading their ace for: -a currently average to below average OF'er and -two depth pieces (both currently not good enough to stick on the ML roster). That GM would be fired seconds after that trade was completed. Even on the Astros side, if they did want to acquire a pitcher of Wheeler's caliber, I doubt they acquire someone with that much money left. Wheeler is in year 3 of a 5 year/$118m contract and has more than half of that money still due. The Phillies would either have to pick up a large chunk of that contract (which they wouldn't) or the Astros would have to give up way way more than that. More like a package of Hunter Brown, Pedro Leon and maybe Chas McCormick. .
I definitely undervalued the package, for sure. I am willing to part with Leon for a top of the rotation pitcher. I have questions about his K rate. As I always state, there is still a lot of baseball left to be played. Anyone can get hot. But if the Phillies do look like sellers at the deadline, I can see them dealing Wheeler, though it obviously would take a big package. Not sure how credible but I heard the Yankees inquired about him last two offseasons. We'll obviously see though. Don't know who would be available for a possible trade, the 6th WC spot will really disincentivize selling and make sellers fewer.
Swap McCormick for Leon. Swap Brown for Solomon. Swap Javier for Paredes. And assuming Phillie has lost a lot of games over the next 6 weeks, they’d prolly listen.
It's going to be interesting at the deadline with the expanded playoffs. The Tigers are the worst team in the American Leauge and are only 8.5 games out of a wild card. Last week we talked a lot about JD Martinez as a possible target. Red Sox are only 4 games out of a wild card spot. The list of sellers might be pretty short which will make it more more difficult and more costly to make a move. Regarding Wheeler.... Phillies are 3 games out from a wild card spot. They aren't near being sellers especially after spending 180 million on Schwarber and Castellanos.
We can just give them the prospects we get from trading McCullers… LOL some of these proposals/ideas are comical.
Very well Do you remember 2017? One of those two guys we can ask, Do you think he will ever win it all??? One of them we can't
25-29 yr old Javier alone at $600k or whatever he makes and locked up for 5 years is more valuable than 3 years of 32-34 year old Wheeler at $24MM/yr. Not to mention he's actually better right now. The only issue with Javier is that he hasn't had the opportunities and been stretched out so we don't know if can do 200+ innings. But outside of that, he's as good as it gets. That $23MM/yr is way more valuable elsewhere.
Wheeler has about $60M in surplus value assuming you don’t assign a premium on SP at the deadline or apply a premium for top end talent due to scarcity. Wheeler projects for $58M for 12.3 fwar over his remaining contract. Javier projects for about 7 fwar over his remaining control, and projecting his arbitration raises he will cost about $30M over that time, giving him about $40M in surplus value. So he gets closer than most would think, and if a team thinks there really is a 180+ip 3+war SP in there he is worth a lot more. But there’s no way Philadelphia, a team having dropped tons of money into free agency in the last few seasons intent on competing in the near term, will give up their ace SP for fair value. You’d have to overpay. Adding in both Brown and Leon might be over the line, but it would very likely take at least one of those 2 added to Javier, plus another non-throw-in prospect.
Was thinking about the possibility of Click using his surplus of OF to supplement the farm system; possibly to replace prospects traded to boost the pitching staff. Looking at teams that might be interested in McCormick or Siri, the Blue Jays and Padres seem like a fit. Cavan Biggio for Jose Siri, who says no? McCormick for Robert Gasser and Jurickson Profar?
