Where do you base this on though? Doncic was euroleague mvp at 18 yrs old. Baldwin JR put up bad stats on a bad team, shot bad percentages and then recorded bad stats in the combine apart from his height. Dieng and Jovic crushes Baldwin Jr on pretty much everything and have the same weaknesses he does. Randle is a good comparison for Banchero if they meant the All Star Randle not the scrub Randle.
If we stay at 17, that's fine by me. You aren't getting "the complete package" that late in the draft. Everyone will have some flaw, perceived or otherwise, in their game....
You've never seen Baldwin play evidently in international ball, AAU, team USA squads featuring teens. I don't know about Hardy, but Baldwin can play High release point Quick release 6'10" Shoots at all 3-tier levels Good Shooting form Beyond NBA 3-pt range Even in the video of a bad season you can see him operate at the FT line with un-blockable floaters and fadeaways. I say Doncic because of height and lack of athleticism. Tell me the vertical of Doncic and lateral quickness? You can believe what you want, but something is just not right. I've seen this kid play and he is much better and too good a shooter to be this. As this bit claims, his prep days were Chet like. Can be a steal around #17 https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2022/5...nts-scrimmage-jalen-williams-terquavion-smith
That last part is going to draw out a bunch of scorn from the Banchero buddies, big no no comparing him to Randle (even though multiple scouts do)
We don't know his lateral quickness cuz Doncic didnt go to the combine. But regardless his 18 yr old MVP at Euro league achievement speaks for itself. If he was so unathletic he wouldn't be MVP at 18 yrs old obv the dude has some athleticism and skill. He was playing against grown men in the 2nd best league in the world and he didn't just particpate, he became the best player. For Baldwin Jr to be compared to Doncic he has got to have some similar credential. It's like comparing Kobe to Anthony Melton and saying Melton could be like another Kobe just because they are both shooting guards. Baldwin Jr's college stats: 41% 2pt, 26.6% 3 pt, 45% TS I mean yeah, he was on a bad team and always triple teamed but you can't say he was unblockable when his efficiency is so bad. Apparently his shot is indeed very blockable cuz his shooting nos are horrible lol. You are right I haven't watched Baldwin play but if what you like about him is shooting than both Jovic and Dieng got you covered. Jovic is 6'11 (taller than Baldwin) 40% from 3, has passing and playmaking skills. He did it in mega basket vs grown men Dieng 6'10 (taller than Baldwin), 18 yrs old younger than Baldwin, 27% 3 pter higher than Baldwin, has playmaking and some defensive upside. He did it in NBDL which is also a tougher league than NCAA.
I agree with you. I do want a defense first forward or guard at 17 or a player who is good on both ends of the floor.
Boozer was 6'8 and did little outside of his PnR with Dwill and the midrange. On that alone, I think future players will have a much more versatile arsenal at disposal.
Here is a list of frequently mentioned players from the combine. Height without shoes, Weight, Standing Reach, and Wingspan. You are not listening to the part where I said he was a one man team. No room to operate. The guy that could touch his head at the rim got 0.9 blocks per game while the one with no vertical got 0.8 blocks per game. One might go #4 in the draft while the other night go in the 20's. Not everything is cut and dry on paper
My criteria at 17 is more "will they get a second contract" and be in the league in a few years. If Josh Christopher turned out to be a bad fit on the team... is their any doubt we could trade him for something that fits better while he's on a rookie deal? BPA all the way down imo.
I don't know Baldwin can play or not. His 3pts shooting was bad in NCAA. For someone label as stretch 4. He do have great size. I think I read his vertical is not even 30".
G League Ignite wing MarJon Beauchamp has a workout lined up with the Rockets, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, who says it’ll be Beauchamp’s first pre-draft workout. Beauchamp is the No. 22 prospect on ESPN’s big board, so he’d be a player Houston would consider with the No. 17 pick, not at No. 3. https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/05/southwest-notes-brooks-doncic-rockets-pelicans.html
3. Jabari Smith, Auburn (has OKC taking Banchero) 17. Dyson Daniels, G League Ignite Parrish, who has the Magic taking Chet Holmgren at No. 1 and then the Thunder grabbing Paolo Banchero, is one of the few writers who thinks Smith will still be there for the Rockets at No. 3. The Rockets would be thrilled if that’s the case. https://www.chron.com/sports/rocket...s-nba-mock-draft-banchero-jabari-17187920.php
That illustrates the point that comps are by nature largely speculative. They can't factor in a player's inner drive towards constant improvement, or lack thereof. Not to mention the bias toward drawing lines to a player that looks similar in appearance.
Yes different eras....bigs back then had to do tend with big ol moose's weight 275 lbs to 300 plus lb Shaq's. Bigs are allowed to start performing guard skills now in grade school. My point is if Boozer took the same path he would do what Banchero is doing......and because Banchero had lanes to maneuver in highschool and college (Mark Williams interior with Wendell Moore 41% from 3 & AJ Griffin 45% from 3 allowing Banchero to feast mid range) doesn't mean he will feast in the NBA. I was told Evan Mobley had mad skills as a point guard coming out of college. Bickerstaff let him try and pulled the plug on that. Took the ball away and said, No, we giving it to Sexton, Garland, Rubio, Okoro, K-Love. No offense Mobley but in the pros players are quicker and longer and smarter.....and they will pick your pocket in a heartbeat. I've told people I've noticed Banchero dribbles well going to his right, but I've noticed it's not good going left. He dribbles sloppy and it's a high dribble. I would and the league probably will, take his drive going right away and force him to go left. In college they let him go wherever he wanted. Him going right set up his turn and drive left. If you take that option away and stay on his right shooting hand....he gets very uncomfortable. Becomes predominantly a mid range shooter. Boozer.
True, it's not an exact science; but if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....it's probably not a mongoose.
Comps are always painted with a very broad brush. They may have some utility regarding marginal guys but they can't account for the intangibles that make highly talented players become great.
