Ted Cruz faces bar complaint over attempt to overturn 2020 presidential election results

A bipartisan watchdog group has filed a Texas Bar complaint against Sen. Ted Cruz for his work on a Pennsyvania case that sought to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in that state and “false and misleading” public statements he made at the time.

The complaint is one of several that the group, known as The 65 Project, plans to file against lawyers who worked on cases brought by former President Donald J. Trump alleging that widespread voter fraud called President Joe Biden's win into question.

The Texas State Bar is now pursuing a disciplinary case against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who also sued to overturn the election and faces a complaint similar to the one against Cruz.

“Mr. Cruz knew that the allegations he was echoing had already been reviewed and rejected by courts,” the complaint reads. “And he knew that claims of voter fraud or the election being stolen were false.”

While many politicians made comments denying the election results, the complaint argues that once Cruz filed a suit, he violated the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct by knowingly making “a false statement of material fact or law to a third person.”

Cruz filed the suit on behalf of Pennsylvania Republicans and aimed to toss about 2.5 million absentee ballots in that state. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected the effort.

Cruz and many others should be disbarred. I'm not a lawyer but my understanding is that as a lawyer you are still held to ethics that mean upholding laws and respecting the Constitution. That is why we saw this dance that Giuliani did where he would give "press conferences" crying about fraud and then when in front of a judge say that he wasn't alleging fraud.

I know in my profession if I were to deliberately misrepresent facts and the law, encourage disruption of things like planning commission meetings I would lose my license.

meh…I’m sure he’ll get a strongly worded letter that he won’t even read, and that will be that

I like that the watchdog group is bipartisan. At first I was worried that it would just be seen as a political witch-hunt . I would hope he is disbarred.

Yeah they should, with good ole Attorney General Paxton included. They are hypocrites, and nothing but lying traitors who should both be disbarred.

I guess lawyer ethics don't mean much if they can be ignored and you are still able to keep your license to practice law.
