Yeah, the thought process that went into the transistor and then the actual creation of it is bonkers, it's amazing how the human can be so creative.

The PC and the Internet/WWW. Not sure anything else is really close for me. The modern mobile phone may be in the next tier. Most everything else has been around for decades, so I won't lay claim to it. :D

I think the modern Internet was from the 1980s and the WWW was the 90s, so sure!

This is what triggered me brain to implode.

The narrator is like, it's ok to watch twice teehee, and made all these footnotes in the Canadian English captions.

That script is like stuff you hear on Star Trek.

Not once does it ever explain how we made all of it on a microscopic level nor how the quality process makes sure those trillions of gates are good enough to work 99.90123456789x percent.

Haha, this is perfect, on some of this it's easier to just say “it's magic“. Thanks for sharing this!

    • Internet is #1 but it’s earliest iterations preclude many on this bbs. I would say commercial, standardized internet & browsers is what changed the world so I’m counting those as ‘inventions’ for my list.
    • Cell phones
    • Tablet computers
    • Ebooks
    • Smart devices
    • VR/AR
    • 3D Printing will be the next industrial revolution

I watched that after the ssd vid and searched for how mosfet works and I still don't get how we manufacture those small transistors and how they work in a reality outside pictures.

If zombies attacked and I was in charge of rebuilding circuits after graduating from a hard drive's worth of youtubes...we're ****ed.

Going back to early greats like Star Wars...great movies/shows don't need it with practical effects.

Yeah, if you told me smart phones would be at where they're at now... Or even exist etc it's pretty wild to think about.

Blue LED lights were a huge invention.

Although red and green LEDs had been around for many years, blue LEDs were a long-standing challenge for scientists in both academia and industry.

Without them, the three colours could not be mixed to produce the white light we now see in LED-based computer and TV screens. Furthermore, the high-energy blue light could be used to excite phosphorus and directly produce white light - the basis of the next generation of light bulb.

Today, blue LEDs are found in people's pockets around the world, inside the lights and screens of smartphones.

White LED lamps, meanwhile, deliver light to many offices and households. They use much less energy than both incandescent and fluorescent lamps.
CRISPR gene editing is huge, too. You can literally do your own gene editing at home.
