I'm in awe that there is a single person that watched the Rockets this year and wants Wood on this team. I haven't hated a player more in my 40 years of fandom. It's not his obvious selfish attitude or how he purposely switches so he doesn't have to ever be physical down low, or how he has never thrown an outlet pass once, or that has no desire to run a set, or how clear it is that he hunts for stats with no regard for team success. The worst thing by far is that he is setting an example of how to be a pro for guys that will end up mattering. Any one of you that quote his shooting percentage or rebound rate and think he has value on a rebuilding team have no idea how teams work or what it takes to win. He's a cancer and it's especially toxic when you have an empty suit as a coach.
Wood is in that stage of ego where he thinks this is his team and his play is more for himself to keep trying to establish that- at least on offense. I think he only adjusts his role for a contender. I'd like a 3+D starting SF in return instead.
Alot of what you said are coaching problems. I think Silas wants them to switch on defense. I think Silas wants him to push the ball. If he has a selfish attitude, it's the coaches responsibility to fix that.
Here's the opposite side of the coin: you have a young team that is getting blown out repeatedly and players on your team that are turning it over, shooting inefficiently, and not passing you the ball when you're open. Based on practice and in-game performance, you've proven to be the best offensive option but are being treated like the worst option/ignored while your PG is dribbling out the clock and chucking up low efficiency jump shots. Frustration is bound to kick in, no? I agree with you in this: I want C Wood traded. But not because of his personality, or even because I think he's a bad player. When we signed him, this was a different team. He might have excelled with a healthy Harden, especially in the PnR. He's legitimately one of the best stretch 5's in the league and knocks down 3 pointers well. On defense he struggles with size and gives up too often, though he switches onto smaller guards pretty well and can play hard for stretches. At this stage in his career, C Wood is in his prime. He's healthy, still relatively young, can give you 20 a night consistently on reasonable efficiency, and in the modern NBA is a really attractive piece, especially at his salary added to the fact that he'll be in a contract year, so extra motivation to show out. The problem is that the teams that want him are the least likely to have future assets (good teams have a habit of going all-in and trading away future firsts, like the Suns did for CP3, Lakers did for AD, Clippers did for PG, Nets did for Harden, Jazz did with Conley, etc.), so we'd need to find the right team. Although getting a prospect back would be nice, I think after this draft and next we'll have more young players than we can give court time to. So the priority should be less on the player return, but trying to get a combination of net neutral player returns contract-wise (i.e., not a bad long term contract) alongside future assets that we could use in subsequent trades or see value in ourselves. I think you'll see the team try to use C Wood to move up this draft and package him with #17 to see if there's any interest, but I'm not sure how much that'll move the needle (teams fall in love with players they've scouted for a while). More likely he'll be part of a bigger deal fitting in somewhere, maybe as part of a 3- or 4-team trade where Ayton gets moved or something like that. That's my guess.
He's had a number of NBA stops and coaching staffs and everyone dogs his attitude. Sometimes things are exactly as they seem
Get your bodies ready… WOOD will 1. Be starting 2. Be starting at least until the deadline 3. Be escorting opposing players to the rim for easy baskets on us 4. Be avoiding screen setting 5. Be ball stopping the offense to show off his face up game One thing about Ruffelllleee is he is not effective at trades or trading high when it’s obvious what needs to be done. I expect wood and Gordon to be here until the deadline unless they ask out
If you're a HC, and you don't like the attitude of one of your players, you bench his ass or trade him. You certainly don't start him and give him 30 mins a game. If you do, then this is certainly a coaching problem.
Obviously folks want to trade him because watching a 6’10” guy shy away from contact, give inconsistent effort, and cop a diva attitude is what makes watching nba basketball exciting. but in terms of what to trade him for: I think u only trade him to move up in this draft if we are absolutely in love with someone. If not, you trade him for a future 1st round pick. trading for player upgrades this early into a rebuild doesn’t make a lot of sense to me given how far away from contention we are and could limit minutes for young player development. We only get a few of these player development years before we have to start winning.
I don't think anybody's opposed to trading Christian Wood. I do think it's erroneous to suggest a dash of tough love coaching is going to iron him out. The 5 other coaching staffs he played under prior to arriving in Houston don't seem to have had much lasting effect. (Unless of course this is a "Sengun shoulda played 49 mpg" type post. Nah bro.)
I might trade him if it meant landing Jalen Duren, who is essentially the anti Christian Wood. Sadly Wood fits this offense better, so it would never happen. Wood isn’t nearly as invaluable as people think, but he has no future here and it would be better for everyone if he was moved. I don’t think it will happen until the deadline though.
How many spots can Wood + assets move up the draft? How high of a first round pick is Wood + assets worth? Spurs get: Christian Wood Nets 2022 1RP (17) Rockets get: Spurs 2022 1RP (9) OR Hornets get: Christian Wood Nets 2022 1RP (17) Rockets get: Mason Plumlee Pelicans 2022 1RP (13) Hornets 2022 1RP (15) OR Trail Blazers get: Christian Wood Jae'sean Tate Nets 2022 1RP (17) Bucks 2023 1RP Rockets get: Eric Bledsoe Trail Blazers 2022 1RP (7)
The Rockets wont' be able to package Wood + #3 to move up in the draft, the top two picks are too valuable to both franchises. His contract is team friendly, so you keep him and hope that Sengun outplays him. If the Rockets could trade him for another later pick or future pick, that would be ideal, but I don't think anyone who has been paying attention is eager to trade picks for Wood. Realistically we'll keep him for the duration of his contract and hope that he doesn't throw a hissy fit when he is inevitably asked to come off the bench.
Wood/Tate/17/Milwaukee's 2023 1st for KCP/10 1. Wizards should be all over this deal considering they have Porzingis for two years and is desperately clinging onto Bradley Beal. Adding Wood and Tate raises the floor for their team. Plus they get another 1st rounder next year to find an heir apparent to Beal if things go sideways next season. 2. We move up to basically secure either a center (Duren or Williams) or take a swing at one of the wings that should still be left (Sochan, Mathurin, etc.) 3. All players in involve are expiring contracts so it wouldn't big a huge financial hit if things don't work out. OR we do a similar deal with Charlotte for #13: Wood/17 for Oubre/#13 I think picks 10-15 are all in play to be had.
I think that's definitely true with EG. I see him as a trade deadline move for the team. With Wood though I could see an offseason trade, probably as a piece facilitating a larger deal. Maybe involved in a multi-team trade where Russ, or Hayward/Rozier, or Ayton, etc. get moved.
